I realize that there are a few UNISA threads and such but I am looking to see if anyone here is a current UNISA (PhD Psych) student or graduate?

My curiosity stems mostly from cost, mainly that I have been given the impression that a UNISA Doctorate is incredibly affordable - $2500.00?

My next concern would be accreditation - is a UNISA PhD accepted by the USDoEd / CHEA?

Finally, to those current students / grads - what do you think of UNISA and of your overall experience?

    THANKS!!!

Hi Brian - This is not exactly my thing but I'm guessing that "acceptance" isn't about DoE or CHEA but more about state licensure and that sort of thing. It depends on how you want to use it. Beyond that I can only guess that a UNISA degree is no different than any other degree from another country. You go through the equivalency process and then you're all set. From what I've read, the gripe with UNISA is their labyrinth system, not with the ultimate degree. I think there are a few members who are enrolled at UNISA. You may need to scan the archives and then send them PMs because mostly they seem to be busy elsewhere.

If I recall correctly, UNISA was accredited by DETC for about 5 years, but decided not to renew. I guess that the benefits did not justify the costs.

CHEA and the US DOE do not "accept" degrees as such; the acceptability of a foreign degree is determined by the institution that is hiring (or school that is admitting) a candidate. UNISA is a well-established and recognized institution. Someone with a UNISA degree should not have any problem in the U.S.

OK now I have some concerns.......

In Florida, for a degree to be accepted via the FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) it must be accredited through the USDoEd / CHEA. This may present an issue....Hmmmmmmm?

Hi Brian - If someone applied for a job and their degree was from Oxford, do you think they'd just trash the resume because the school is not accredited by the US DOE? How about the University of Paris, or the Australian National University?

There are well established ways of determining academic equivalency. In most cases it's just a formality.

Don't worry. Evaluation of a foreign degree (particularly one that has an established history like UNISA) is a pretty routine thing. The FDLE has access to several verification resources.--you should have no problem.

Brian, I just studied their website, and am wondering the same thing. I hope that someone here can give us more info.

I'm in the Tampa Bay area too, there just aren't many options near us.
