Quite by accident, I happened upon this transcript, which is from a Hawaii legislative hearing.

A woman who has a degree from Central Pacific University is raked over the coals, and the real shame is that she has otherwise excellent credentials. The good stuff starts on page 14.

  2. And then the president and founder of Central Pacific University is grilled. He has his master's and doctorate from unaccredited Honolulu University (and previously worked for Honolulu University). The most amusing part to my mind is where they are discussing Central Pac U's physical facilities, and how they had employees pose as students for photographs to pretend that the University has a face-to-face operation.

Our charmer says she taught at Font Vaunt College. The actual place is Fontbonne (now) University. Them name sis hard tew remember.

  4. She said Fontbonne and the transcriber documented it incorrectly.

    Hi Michael,

You need to get yourself a degreeInfo players program/handbook, i.e., Bear's Guide.

Central Pacific University is unaccredited. It says in part,
"During a period when faculty and staff were identified on the web site, we noted that among the dozen or so listed faculty, there were eight unaccredited and generally non-wonderful degrees."

Honolulu is also unaccredited but has probably an even less wonderful description in Bear's Guide. Formerly from CA where they used the name Golden State University. Now (was?)operating illegally in Hawaii because they claim to be qualified to operate in Hawaii which is a no-no for unaccredited schools to claim in that great state. They also claimed accreditation from a less than wonderful accreditation agency.

Michael, these places appear to be the typical habitually unaccredited institutions that give your believed CCU such a bad name. :)

Bruce: "Quite by accident, I happened upon this transcript..."

John: Wow. In my entire life, I never had the accident of finding a several-hundred-page transcript of a committee meeting of an obscure subcommittee of the Hawaii state senate. Some people have all the luck.

And what an interesting (to me) thing it turned out to be. I had once asked a Honolulu-based friend to visit Central Pacific U, which he passed every day en route to work. Dozens of attempts, and never anyone there. As the transcript now makes clear, they were renting or borrowing two rooms at this academy for autistic children, but had apparently used the rooms once in four years, for their 'graduation ceremony' when three hapless Asians came to Honolulu for the big event. But the big school name banner hung on the outside of the building for several years, and probably still does.

(Central Pacific U was one of the names we considered when we were sitting around trying to think up a name for what became Greenwich U in 1989. (The name "Loihi University" was felt to be a bit premature and symbolically confusing.*)

    Thanks Bill,

You know I wanted to look it up in my copy of Bear’s 14th edition, but my brother in law has borrowed it. Do you think I will get it back along with my rake, drill, and the cup of sugar I gave him last week??

    Veritas,

    Michael

Sometimes, for my own amusement, I'll do a Google search with "Ph.D." and the name of a mill or otherwise non-wonderful school. Once in awhile, I'll get something interesting, as in this case.

  10. There's an article about the hearing at http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/Oct/14/ln/ln08a.html

Not only is David Drews president of Central Pacific University, he is branch chief of the Honolulu Family Guidance Center. In that capacity, he oversees the guidance center's contracts with private service providers, including Loveland Academy -- which provided him two rooms for his use in return for his painting and carpeting those rooms.

Sounds like Drews has a knack for effectively utilizing small rented spaces.

  13. From the transcript: "... Dr. Drews had on file his record of outside employment, attachment 3, and had disclosed to his supervisor his connection to Loveland Academy, attachment 4. ..."

Wonder if that record of outside employment included the Drews & Associates Green Card Lottery Service?

    Greenwich U to be killed

Speaking of Pacific bottom-feeders, the Australian government has decided to override the Norfolk Island local government in order to kill off Greenwich U, which they describe as a national embarrassment. See this recent story in The Australian.

The Oz government has also put up its own warning site about diploma mills.

Likening these institutions to bottom-feeders is unfair. These fish are like the garbage collectors of the ocean and are an important part of the ecology. :)

Or if D&A was incorporated in August 1999 but had a web site up as early as December 1997?

What is interesting is to follow the testimony of Drews, pages 152 - 164, as elicited by Special Counsel Kawashima while referring to the CPU web page content in question.

The one thing that really stands out is that this completely misleading information was on CPU's pages for at least sixteen months, from November 1999 until April, 2001, when CPU began making changes as a result of the internal investigation by the DOH.
