Oops, you're right, thanks. Economic Times reprinted it without a paywall, so I've fixed it in my original post.

I sometimes think about how Theodore Roosevelt legitimately struggled against the subjects at Harvard that weren't of personal interest. He had to buckle down to get through Greek, for example, while he was primarily interested in natural science. Nowadays, he could have just taken "Philosophy for the Science Major" or some other softball course and met the requirement that way. No need to struggle.

Far too often colleges serve to validate what a student already knows without really challenging them. That, I believe, is the real reason we see such high washout rates for engineering or nursing. There are many degrees for which you can just substitute an uninformed opinion for an educational outcome. The fields where you can't become far less attractive to those who just want a school to recognize their innate brilliance rather than have the audacity to try to teach them something.

Engineering has always had a high drop out rate. Actually, the dropout rate has decreased in engineering since the times of Teddy Roosevelt, and I can affirm it is not from softball courses.
