Thinking of attending FHSU. Looking for advice on online schools with "structure."

Good morning! This is my second new thread at this wonderful website, so forgive me if I am repeating a topic that is constantly revisited.

I have received some wonderful advice so far. I am researching online distance education . I already have an associate degree from many years ago, and I am looking to obtain a bachelor degree in liberal/general studies for growth and personal enrichment. I love to learn, and I am looking to further my education for pleasure/self-exploration in a variety of topics.

With that said, I don't know how I would do with "independent study." I feel I would need structure, with meeting times, deadlines, etc. to keep me accountable. I am the type of person who would enjoy meeting students on discussion boards, etc. Also, I need a school that is affordable. I would be receiving very little assistance if any, and the rest would be out of pocket.

The amount of online distance education is mind boggling! I really like the looks of the Fort Hays program, and the tuition makes it even better.

Now, onto my question. If I am a new distance learning student looking for structure, accountability, deadlines, etc., what would be some good recommendations for a choice of schools?

Are there schools with more of an "independent study" format that I should shy away from?

Any feedback on FHSU in particular?

If you have followed me this far, I appreciate it! Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

With FHSU you have deadlines for every course; most courses require participation in discussion threads, also with deadlines. I found the vast majority of professors very approachable and engaged in the forums, so you feel like you're part of a class, even though it is online learning (independent to an extent). The price is affordable, it has a good rep and I enjoyed my experience at FHSU.

Eastern New Mexico University and Western New Mexico University both spring to mind and are rather affordable if you keep it part time. University of Wyoming has some interesting programs. Colorado State Pueblo has options. American Military U/American Public U is a strong distance school that is for profit but regionally accredited. Your local University/College probably has distance learning options that are very affordable.

With all that said the "Big 3" should be considered; Thomas Edison, Charter Oak State College, and Excelsior College. You could choose a program from them (degree plan), and just work towards it taking classes anywhere you like be it the local CC/University, one of the colleges mentioned above, and even supplement as much as your comfortable with CLEP and DSST exams.

Real question is what are you trying to accomplish? What degree do you want?

Rebel100, thak you for all of the school suggestions! I am going to check each one of them out. To answer some of your questions, I would love to attend classes in person, but I have Crohn's disease which can make things "unpredictable" at times. Otherwise, I would love to take a local class. So, at-home study is what will work for me.

I live in Pennsylvania, and have priced tons of colleges, and they are very expensive. Tuition is typically between $400-$700 per credit.

As I stated in my post previously, I want a bachelor's degree, but I am focusing liberal studies because I am looking to learn a little of everything. It is more for my personal growth/enrichment. :)

BLUEMASON, thank you for sharing your FHSU experience with me! It sounds like a great school to attend.

I am in a completely different program but have had a good experience at FHSU.
