So, why does one get a theology degree? Is it because they have a keen interest in learning about religion or is it because they want to become a minister or something of that nature?

I have always found the history behind religion interesting and often consider pursuing a degree in it, but at the same time i'm not an overly devout christian and not sure if that is a requirement for a theology degree.

    thanks

Why get a theology degree? Well, for some it is because they are looking to go into full time ministry. Some denomination have a requirement of an MDiv or equiv for ordination. Some do it because they are interested in teaching/researching in the area. Some lay people do it because of general interest.

As far as your question, most seminaries will have you on the application write out your "conversion experience" and talk about your life. Some do not. However there are some schools where their religion department covers not only Christianity but Judism, Islam, Hinduism, etc. The are mostly Universities that have a religion department.

So based on your post, a Seminary may not be the way to go but a secular university with a religious studies degree or the like might suit your interest.

If a person were interested in ordination as a minister, one would go for the 90 semester hour Master of Divinity degree. However, if one was interested in some specific sub-discipline of theology such as maybe church history, one could go for the Master of Arts in Theological Studies, which would normally be a 30 or 60 semester hour non-ordination degree. And, if a person changes their mind after taking the MATS, normally one would be able to apply their credits from that towards their MDiv.
