Social science lectures CAN be good, but the norm is that they're boring and frequently useless. Technical lectures (like for Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry) are a necessity to help students pass.
If I have a good textbook, I can teach myself most things. I had a lot of boring and bad science teachers in middle and high school. I slept and day dreamed in chemistry and finished with an "A." We had a pretty good textbook. I also had to teach myself algebra since my teacher was often sick leaving us with a substitute.
