    The Institution of British Engineers

    Founded 1928

The IBE is dedicated to the promotion of the Engineering Profession.

Its aims are to provide worldwide support and assistance to the members for the betterment of those members and the profession as a whole.

For many years now the IBE has promoted the engineering profession throughout the world. Now through the power of the internet we face the new millennium using the most revolutionary medium for worldwide communication all for the good of our members and engineers
    everywhere.

This institution predates ECUK and actually voted for creation of Consul of Engineering Institutions what to become EC.

They claim recognition by FEANI - only their Sales Engineer designation.

They have an NVQ 5 - Diploma in Business Engineering.

And couple of other registrations with Engineering Delegation UK.

They membership with World Federation of Engineering Institutions is pending approval.

    Are they recognized?
Are they on a level of independed institution such as IEEE in USA?

    Any value to their credentials?
An employee coworker has their designation.

He also has a letter in French signed by Secretary General FEANI in the 80's in recognition of his qualification.

    Any info

I had never heard of the Institution of British Engineers until now and they do not belong to the UK Engineering Council.

The gold standard for British engineering institutions and societies are those comprising the UK Engineering Council (which operates under a royal charter)
    http://www.engc.org.uk/registration/inst_addresses.asp
It is my understanding that only members of listed organizations can become Chartered Engineers, the equivalent of Professional Engineers here in the US.

When I lived in the UK I belonged to two organizations (RAeS and IED) because they provided useful technical publications and networking opprtunities.

Unless the Institution of British Engineers offers you some direct benefits I do not see any advantage in becoming a member.

The website of the "Institution of British Engineers," at www.britishengineers.com, provides no specifics about the activities of the society, and does not name a single person associated with the society. On the other hand, it offers detailed information about its titles (including "Fellow" and "Vice-President") and the attractive certificates that it provides, and it offers a clear avenue for online payment. Perhaps I am being too cynical, but in the absence of other evidence, one might be inclined to suspect that the primary function of this organization is to market impressive-sounding titles.

Continuing Professional Development (Education & Training)

The Institution of British Engineers is totally committed to the philosophy of Lifelong Professional Learning.

The IBE seeks to encourage and commit its members to a formal or informal, structured or un-structured programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The IBE encourages the closest ties with other bodies, like the Institute of Continuing Professional Development (the IBE President, John Fenton, is a founder fellow of ICPD) and its ladder of membership grades and qualifications is designed to cater for and encourage the members in each career level from apprentice to Managing Director, so that British Engineers remain BEST IN WORLD.

TrainingZONE is an online network of 47,000 members and the UK's most popular site for training and HR professionals.

John Fenton is co owner of this as well.
