Hello I will soon graduate a Management Faculty and I have applied for a MSc in Management Programme at The University of Edinburgh and for the same programme at The University of Sheffield. I was delighted to receive offers for a place from both Universities. I thoughrouly studied the courses' structure and also many rankings. However, in order to make a well-documented decision I would like to come in contact with some experience-based opinions. Therefore, can you please tell me which of the programmes is better and more focused on future professional development? Thank you very much. George
Speaking as someone on the other side of the Atlantic, both are good schools but Edinburgh is one of the most prestigious universities in Europe, isn't it? To me it would be like comparing Harvard and Boston College. Both a good schools but one is clearly a notch above.
University wise, Kizmet is correct (Edinburgh vs. Sheffield); however, as far as B-School rankings (Europe) the gap isn’t nearly as large: University of Edinburgh Business School - 53 University of Sheffield Management School – 64 Top Business Schools in Europe | Top MBA However, neither university’s B-School (Europe) was ranked in 2010 within the top 75 by Financial Times: http://rankings.ft.com/exportranking/european-business-school-rankings-2010/pdf And neither MSc in management program was ranked in the top 65 (Europe) by FT in 2010: Business school rankings from the Financial Times - Masters in management 2010
Just mentioning: Durham has an MA in Management (Global Learning Centre : MA in Management and MA in Marketing - Durham University) for a Total of £7,000. AACSB accredited Placements in all of major56 top-lists: Top Business Schools in Europe - 60 Top 75 by Financial Time - 41 Top 65 Msc Mgmt (Europe) by FT in 2010 - 56 Plus the University is overall ranked 5th in the UK. Edinburgh Business School vs Sheffield Business School Thank you for the info. One other thing. The difference between the fees ( 13,500 for the MSc in Management at Edinburgh University and 7,100 for the MSc in Management at Sheffield University ) is not only caused by the fact that The University of Edinburgh is more prestigious, right? I mean the fee for the Edinburgh MSc in Management can't be twice the fee for The Sheffield MSc in Management just for a few ranking positions. I tend to believe that the EBS Programme itself is a notch above, although the credentials of these Masters seem to be similar. Can you please enlighten me in this matter? Thank you very much for your help. George
University of Sheffield Management School does have AMBA accreditation (AMBA likely has significance in Europe vs. U.S.). University of Edinburgh-EBS does not have programmatic accreditation (e.g., AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA). Note: Hult International Business School (Boston /San Francisco) is the first, and only, AMBA accredited school in the U.S. Hult Global Campuses - Boston, San Francisco, Dubai, London & Shanghai
Well, this difference between fees does not reflect the ranking difference between these two Universities. that's my opinion, maybe it is wrong...
Thank you major56. Can you please tell me what's the difference between the programmatic accreditation and the institutional accreditation? Maybe this could be the cause that generates the clear difference between the fees? ( EBS - 13.500 and Sheffield - 7.100 )
University of Edinburgh Business School DOES have programmatic accreditations (EQUIS and AMBA) … my error. University of Edinburgh Business School ~ Accreditation and rankings
Institutionally, both UK universities are recognized via Royal Charters (e.g., giving them the power to grant degrees)—Edinburgh since 1582 and Sheffield in 1905. “Specialized or programmatic accreditation normally applies to programs, departments, or schools that are parts of an institution. The accredited unit may be as large as a college or school within a university or as small as a curriculum within a discipline.” College Accreditation in the United States-- Pg 2
