    Hello,

I've just started investigating the idea of going back to finish my degree via DL and have a few questions for those of you with more experience. Without getting into a big debate on DETC, is it possible to go with a DETC accredited BS and then attend an RA masters program? I understand that DETC is a second-tier accrediting agency, but my hope was that I could save some money and then attend a RA masters program. Maybe I'm just being too cheap?????

Any ideas, suggestions, etc. would be welcome!

It's certainly possible, though I would bet not too common. I would investigate graduate programs you'd be interested in, and get their policies *in writing* before you expend the time, money, and effort of earning a DETC degree.

BTW, what field are you interested in? It's quite possible that an RA degree could be done cheaper than a DETC degree at the undergrad level. The DETC schools that I would recommend (American Military University for example) really aren't that much cheaper than a lot of RA programs at the undergrad level. At the graduate (Master's) level, DETC is usually quite a bit cheaper than RA.

    Best of luck,

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at Computer Science or something similar as I have already completed 70 + hours at the University of Michigan and have worked for the past 8 years as a consultant and writer. I really don't need to finish it for my job, but I only stopped working on it when my father became very sick -- had to help out on the bills and such. I guess I'm just finishing for my own piece of mind.

Any advice on an RA school? I have just started checking into Charter ...

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

With 70+ credits, you're not too far from a degree, so I personally would go for a RA degree and forget about DETC. Some (but by no means all) RA DL schools you might want to consider are:

Thomas Edison State College http://www.tesc.edu (B.S. in Computer Tech)

Excelsior College http://www.excelsior.edu (B.S. in CIS)

Charter Oak State College http://www.cosc.edu (B.S.G.S in Computer Science Studies)

All those schools are very flexible in regards to credit, you can earn credit by exam (DANTES, CLEP, etc.), portfolio (life experience), and transfer. With your life experience and prior education, I'm sure you can find a RA school where you can earn a degree fairly quickly.

    Best of luck,

    Bruce
