To the guy working at BEST BUY.. how much do you make .

I only make 11.71 and this job is stressing me WAY to much for that little pay.

    Worked for me, twice....sort of.

When earning my Associates I went before a Promotion Board for Sergeant in our law enforcement unit. My education was a topic of discussion for about 15 minutes of that 2 hour ordeal and they seemed impressed. It was a factor in my promotion but certainly not the cause of it.

In changing careers my MBA put me on the short list of applicants to be interviewed, however it was my experience in technology and project management that ultimately got me the job. So I think in both cases education played a role, more so in my MBA than the AS, but neither of them actually "got" me the job, it was the other factors in addition to that did it.

    Another point to consider

I agree most people do the hard work of earning a degree to get a job. But what about the purpose of owning your own business? I am doing a general psych masters to teach, but also a masters in professional counseling to start my own eventual counseling practice. So my dream us not to work for someone else, but for myself. So my success story is yet to be written but I don't factor the economy in unneccessarily.

I still work for my same employer but have been promoted two times in two years. Both positions required a bachelor's degree where my previous positions did not. In two years since obtaining my degree, I have went from making about $59K to 90K. So, I consider my "online" degree a success (for now). :D

I got a basic electronics certificate from the Cleveland Institute of Electronics in 2007, which helped me get a temp position at a battery manufacturer ($14/hr).

Unfortunately, on my second day of work, management showed up and told us all they were shutting down that particular factory ASAP...

I worked the remaining two months. :(

Luckily, I found a new job in IT (my current position) but it was not due to my electronics certificate.

I am self employed - believe me you never work for yourself - you work for your customers or clients (or you go out of business). It is far tougher than working for someone else. ;)

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I just landed the position of Director of Online Faculty Training and Management, at a well known online university, which also has regular campuses, and a few campuses overseas. Due to privacy restrictions I can not name the university, but I will say that it is not with University of Phoenix, since everyone who knows me, has asked this question!

While I do have 2 bachelor degrees earned on a regular college campus, I also have 2 master degrees earned solely online and I am working on an online doctorate. If anything having earned my masters degrees online and pursuing a doctorate online, helped me to land the position, since this particular school said that they specifically wanted someone who had experience teaching, developing courses, and training online; and experience being an online student to understand this side of things.

While this position is a remote one at a mostly online university, I will point out that having two online graduate degrees has not hampered my changes of employment. Before this position, I was the Director of Technology and Media for a K to 12 school district and prior to this position, I was Director of Systems Analysis and Support for a medium sized hospital system.

    Congratulations, Scaredrain, that's fabulous news!

I guess I can update on me as well. I'm starting a new position in two weeks with a new university here -- I'll be an HR Manager without a portfolio for awhile as we build the HR shop, so I can be deployed as and where needed.

During my interview, one of the panel, the executive advisor to the president of the uni, asked his first question about my dissertation, and we in fact discussed it for about 10 minutes. In addition, the HR Director (my new immediate boss) told me that he thought my Ph.D. work, plus previous experience as an academic, would really be beneficial in bringing credibility to the vision he has for the HR department in terms of liaising with the faculty.

So I think that definitely counts in terms of my online work still playing a part in me getting better roles and furthering my career.

    Cheers,
    Adrienne

Question - is it a paid postion or do you need a back up part-time position?

Mine is a full time paid remote position, with about 20% travel.

So, 2 weeks to go and I must say - I am working my butt off with Liverpool U MSc/ISM. But I can't say I feel fatigued though even with the work. I'm enjoying the structure of the program and don't mind repeatedly cranking out papers and engaging in debates with people. It beats writing exams in my books any day. This week's homework looks particularily nasty but I'll be fine. I don't know how my less technically adept calssmates will do though.

In terms of what this thread is actually about, it looks like I'll be running a new department at work next week. I'll find out what level they'll be promoting me to though...

I got a position (I work in Government) that was never available to me without a B.A., no matter how talented I am :) Went from one department to a more prestigious one, and got a raise as a result. Wasn't a huge raise, though- about $2k.

Still, I'm not complaining. I like my job now and any improvement helps. Plus this job is secure and that means a lot. Not a spectacular "success story", sorry.

Pretty soon it will be called a "taxable event"!
