    Plenty of religions talk(ed) of an "underworld" of some kind. That doesn't mean that there is a literal underworld.

    Well there is an underworld under ground in our days.
    The military installations, missile sites, mining operations, hideouts to Cold War-era bunkers, etc.
    Caves going deeper in the ground could have appeared to others as if there is underworld.
