In another vain effort to be as smart as Ted (never gonna happen) I read up a little on Alrutheus Ambush Taylor, just because of his magnificent name. Well, I'll never be as smart as Dr. Taylor, either. His PhD is from Harvard. He was a painstaking scholar of Reconstruction and author of at least three books on the topic. A fine historian, professor and author. Some info here: Taylor, Alrutheus Ambush (1893-1955) | The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed

Alrutheus! A Google search finds only one human in the world, other than old Ambush, with that name: one Alrutheus Buchanan, an engineer in Texas.

Diligent work, Dr. Bear. I searched too, figuring there had to be a historical precedent - and totally failed to find any but these two. The professor and the engineer appear to be the only Alruthei (?) on record. Makes me wonder what led Alrutheus Ambush Taylor's parents to that highly original name for their son. My hat's off to them.

Looking further, I think Alrutheus may be a Latinized version of Alruth - known both as a first and last name, particularly in Germany and France. There are a few examples of both in the U.S.

Genealogical Site "My Heritage" has 1,346 records for surname Alruth. Yes - I figure we may very well have found the source of the much-rarer first name, Alrutheus. Best explanation I can offer.
