Six years ago - today, I was still trying to be euphoric about President Trump's victory but, I was in a dark place.

I was still recovering from brain surgery and coming to terms with my Glioblastoma diagnosis. However it turned into a Wonderful day. This afternoon's Facebook memory:

-My incredible wife drove me up to my Judo Club, Sport Judo for the Kayla Harrison clinic. Judoka from all of the DC area clubs were there. Kaya talked about the London and Rio Olympics. She taught her favorite version of Jugi gatame, gripping technique, and reviewed two of my favorite throws, Ogoshi and koshi guruma. She answered questions. She will be a commentator for the World Series of Martial Arts beginning December 31 at Madison quare Garden. So then my coach, Maurice Allan(MBE) (Mo) started talking about of the club's players who was recovering from brain surgery. It took me a moment to realize he was speaking of me. He called me to the front. I bowed to Kayla Harrison and shook her hand thanking her for the clinic. Then I bowed to my coach and tried to stand next to him. He gently pushed me back towards Kayla Harrison. The Double Olympic Gold medalist told me - my coach told her my story and that he was promoting me, but she wanted me to be one of the first to receive one of her black belts. She handed me a black belt embroidered in gold with her name and "World Champion" and "Olympic Champion." Mo gave me one of his black belts too. I will treasure both. I'm so looking forward to getting back on the mat in a judogi. My beautiful wonderful wife brought me home and we had a delightful dinner.-

Postscript: I was able to compete several times since, taking medals in a few big competitions. Although I still daydream about competing,my focus is now and will remain coaching. I have many amazing role models. Today, I am thinking- "Never Ever give up. Eternal THANK YOUS to Mo and Kayla. Never ever give up. Keep praying.
