  1. Sex Therapy Not Only for the Wealthy

    Snippet:
    • THE poor of KwaZulu-Natal are set to become the first in South Africa to receive free sex therapy.

On Wednesday, 13 public health workers qualified as sex advisers in a pilot project initiated by the KwaZulu-Natal Health Department and the Finnish government. The year-long course, conducted long distance, was conducted by the Finnish Jyväskylä Polytechnic. ...

Grandmother Thelma Dasrath, of Craigieburn Clinic in Umkomaas, said exposure to the subject of sex had opened doors to her, both "personally and professionally". ...
This is the weirdest DL story I have ever come across!

San Francisco's own California-approved Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality offers low-residency masters and doctoral degrees in sexology.

It's easy to laugh at these guys, but they actully have a fairly unique program that has won respect in some quarters. They really do research (imagine their labs!!) and have a definite profile in their niche area.

Here's their on-line journal 'Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality' (If you are easily offended, you might want to pass on this):

    http://www.ejhs.org

One of their faculty, Gloria Brame, is a BD/S&M/fetish researcher, author of 'Come Hither: A Commonsense Guide to Kinky Sex' and 'Different Loving: The World of Sexual Dominance and Submission'.

One of their bigshots is Charles Moser who has lectured on the UC San Francisco AIDS clinical grand rounds on 'sexual disfunction in HIV diseases'. Moser wrote an article for the SF Medical Society's 'SFM' on 'Sexual Medicine: A New Medical Specialty'.

'Psychology Today' interviewed Moser in their Sept/Oct 1999 issue in an article entitled 'The Pleasure of Pain: Why Some People Need S&M'.

Mildred Brown of IASHS co-authored 'True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism' 1996 Jossey-Bass.

Just like Degreeinfo, they are interested in religion. Mark Malan presented 'Identifying Religious Confessional Policies that Influence the Incidence of Psychosexual Shame Youth Suicide' at the 2002 Conference of the Center for Studies on New Religions, Salt Lake City June 20-23.

IASHS was one of the sponsors of the Society for Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS) western regional conference April 2002 in Manhattan Beach.

Edwin Haeberle, a graduate of IASHS, has been a research associate at the Kinsey Institute, a visiting professor at SFSU, the U. of Kiel and the U. of Geneva. He was Director of Information and Documentation, AIDS Center, Federal Health Office Berlin. He's currently Director of the Magnus Hirschfeld Archive for Sexology at Humboldt University, Berlin. He continues to advise IASHS doctoral students.

Haeberle delivered the keynote address at the 14th World Congress of Sexology Aug 23-7 1999 in Hong Kong.

Cynde Moya of IASHS delivered 'Subject Access to Pornography for Serious Research Purposes' at 2001 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology Nov 2-8, 2001 in Washington DC.

In the same vain, IASHS is world renowned (in certain circles) for possessing what is said to be the world's largest collection of pornography. It's housed in 8 warehouses in San Francisco, and includes 150,000 films.

Bottom line: They are kind of the diametrical opposite of Bob Jones.

But they are part of what makes San Franscisco and the CA-approved sector great.

I can remember my youth. I was challenged in the area of availability and frequency and had not the time to consider whether I was doing something right or wrong. But then who cared.

Ahem. Does this mean all alone? :)

  5. This was a year-long DL course on becoming a sex advisor, not a course on how to have sex (whether with yourself or someone else).

For foreign aid most countries provide tractors, seed grain or irrigation projects. Scandinavians send sex therapists and dirty movies. Now tell me that ethnic stereotyping has no basis in reality.

It appears this course has quite a lot of utility.

But is it accredited? By degreeinfo definition an unaccredited course would have limited utility.

If such a course opened doors for me professionally, what must my occupation be?
