Sounds like a decent way to give an honorary degree. Correct me if I am wrong and pardon me for my ignorance - Disclaimer: did not mean to offend anybody.

I've never heard of portfolio assessment for an honary degree (see this thread for a discussion of honary doctorates http://www.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?t=30282)

Portfolio assesment is a well established method of obtaining credit for prior learning and credit earned this way is accetable to many ucolleges and universities. Usually there is a limit; the California State University system allows up to 12 units to be earned towards a 120 unit bachelor degree. The portfolio contains documentation of your prior learning and usually it must be similar to the material covered in a regular college course. For example an engineer could challenge a course in programming by submitting examples of his job related programming (I have ben writng programs for several decades but have never taken a college course - but started by taking company sponsored classes).

Google "portfolio assessment" and you will find lots of information.

Occasionally even doctorates are awarded based on a portfolio of published work in the UK and Japan (A CEO of a previous employer was awarded a Ph.D. by this method by a Japanese university.

I think a lot of people mistake the bogus "life experience evaluation" that a lot of fake schools do, which basically consists of submitting a resume with the genuine credit-by-portfolio that Edison, Charter Oak, Ohio U, and Excelsior (and a handful of other schools) offer.

It's not really ready for prime time (we're redoing everything) but the collection of articles from degreeinfo (before the major server move) had several excellent articles on portfolio learning. The articles can be accessed here

The specific articles on portfolio learning (prices, if mentioned, are horribly out of date) are

    The Unofficial TESC Portfolio Guide
    The BS in Levitation
    and
Prove What You Know: Portfolio Credit

    Hope that helps.
