Numerous comments have been made in several different threads about the ridiculous amount of stickys on the first page. Is anyone listening?

I click on "New Posts" when I visit degreeinfo and as such, never see the stickied threads unless somebody happens to post something new in them.

As airtorn mentioned you can bookmark this link

    http://www.degreeinfo.com/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post

And then you'll just see a list of all the new posts since you last checked. (But yes, there are too many stickies. I think I remember one of the admin/mods saying that they are working on moving the info contained in the stickies to separate area of the site, but I guess it takes awhile to move/parse all that data.)

Mods don't control that feature. I suggest you send a PM to Chip. I know it's on his to-do list.

I vote for making this thread a Sticky.

I think the reason for the delay is the fact that Chip does not want to loose all of the great posts in those stickies. Some of those stickies have years of accumulated information in them, so they are valuable. They still help many people. It will require his vBulletin guy to make a whole new section with linkbacks so that people can find them. So it's a big job and not just some easy edit.

I do agree but I think we can make one thread call "sticky" and only the mods can add to it. They would add all the links to all the threads we want as sticky's. Does that make sense?

    Um.

    1. Create new thread
    2. Sticky the first post in the thread.
    3. Put links to all the stickied threads in the first post mentioned in point 2 above.
    4. Lock the new thread after the links are in the thread, preventing modification or posting off topic (only mods or admins can add new links in the top post)
    5. Unstick the large volumes of stickies. They will sort back to times appropriate for their last post.
    6. Don't prune the DB. (Which doesn't seem to happen anyway)

This is not rocket science or difficult. Moreover, anyone with a passing knowledge of VB and forum management has done this before.

Now there may be some fubar code reason why this hasn't been done as VB tends to get less and less flexible as you have VB guys that modify stuff.. but without knowing anything the reason provided doesn't stack.

Two cents. I could care less either way but I'm tired of seeing a main page full of stickies and this isn't a Microsoft beta. I don't want to do the work to fix it with a user based work around. :)

No ill will intended, I just post loud.

YOU POST LOUD? NEVER HAPPENS!! You are always the perfect gentleman. From our conversations with Chip, it seems that he wants to do it in a more elegant way than you suggest. The idea of a "Best of Degree Info" section has been thrown around. I am inquiring about the delay as we speak.

We all appreciate the check in.

If Chip is intending to do something more elegant that the suggestion, that's completely fine. No one is going to tell him not to.

It's also understood that the moment you do something to placate the "fix the stickies" you're going to get a bunch of people saying "where'd the stickies go". It's a loop.

But what can be done is: "This is what we're doing with the stickies and this is the timeline." Do that and stick to it and you eliminate all the banter from those that have been around a while. Transparency shuts down the post loud crew :)

    Best,
    ITJD

Doesn't it just move us onto a new issue?

Yeah but it wouldn't be as consistently annoying as this issue to the management; which extends our ability to post loud before being spoken to about it. I'd imagine the sticky conversation to be the site moderation's recurring herpes infection in terms of endearment.

    Huh?
Send that to Chip. You are preaching to the choir. I was just relaying the info I have heard.

You almost sound like a paying customer here. If you are not happy, we will gladly give you a refund of everything you have paid. Wait, let me add that up.

    Surf-

We're cool. I think my reputation for lacking a filter when annoyed colors a lot of everything else I post. Price of being one of the cool kids I'd suppose.

What I was saying was: Thanks for checking in with Chip. As far as the "paying customer" comment; where I come from letting something go that people are complaining about when there's an easy solution that can be put in place until a more elegant solution can be taken care of is called "analysis paralysis". I hate that condition in all things. Not personal.

Now that's not intended as a slight. It is what it is. I don't know Chip or any of the people programming and I'm sure they've got other things to do with their lives than to screw around with the forum when it works ok as is. Good luck with the solution I suppose.

I don't like the stickies either. If it were in my power, I would fix them for all of us. I have reported the complaints to Chip.

PS. I was joking about the paying customer comment.

Like others, I click "new thread" and couldn't even tell you even one of our stickies. BUT, I'm here every day. If I were a rare visitor, I couldn't do that because there would be too much to wade through. So, I hate to say they don't annoy me- but seriously, they don't.
