I've read up on the master's of management at UMUC and wanted to know if anyone had any inside info (current or former student or anyone in the know) on the online graduate programs.

I know they're RA but I wanted to know:

    1) What are the online classes like?

    2) Are there alot of group projects?

    3) How are the professors (generally speaking)?

    4) Was it easy dealing with administration and counselors?

Thanks for any info. I couldn't find anything using the Search.

    Iquagmire-

If you are having trouble searching UMUC here, try a google search. I'm a Marylander and had considered UMUC at one point, but the more research I did, the less interest I had. Their reputation isn't very good.

    Thank you for the info...

Where would I find detailed reviews? I didn't find too much at Epinions.

Anyone else have any info or opinions on UMUC?

    UMUC Faculty

Well, I am a UMUC faculty. I can tell you from a faculty standpoint, they are pretty good to teach for. The vast majority of my students are engaged and interested. They have an eArmy contract and I enjoy the Army students.

    Marylars,

Can you expand on the "reputation isn't very good" bit? UMUC sounds great, very B&M, etc, so I wonder what the bad rep would be like. Thank you--

The opinions that I have found on the studentsreview website mirror the opinions of local friends and colleagues who have opted to take coursework from UMUC. I am a Marylander and I have yet to meet someone here who feels the school has a good reputation. I had seriously contemplated doing coursework there, myself, but decided against it the more I researched the school.

Looks like UM gets bashed for its military and distance education programs. Still, I'm considering their Fire Science program. Mainly because they're an RA institution. I'm currently a Management student with AMU/APUS.

Does anyone know if UMUC will accept transfer credit from AMU/APUS? UMUC's website states they accept transfer credit from RA schools, but I was wondering if anyone has gotten away with UMUC recognizing credit from NA schools?

    Thanks.

    Transfer credit

I think the only way to find out is to ask them. I met a girl at Nova who was accepted into the MBA program with a non RA degree (Florida Metropolitan University undergrad). They made her take pre-req courses to make up the difference.

I have taken 5 graduate courses at UMUC and earned a Graduate Certificate (Accounting) for those courses. I enjoyed my courses very much and would highly recommend them. The courses are not extremely rigorous, but aren't easy either. Typically, you're expected to post to a message board discussion each week and respond to your classmates. I also usually had a writing assignment or quiz each week. There was a mid-term and final exam as well.

None of the coursework was proctored. The exams were very in depth and in most cases I submitted over 10 pages for each in all five courses. The course platform is not fancy, but easy to use and adequate.

There are group projects in each course. It worked out to 4 assignments, but in most cases it was a large project broken down into 4 sections. The instructor assigns the groups and most were good to deal with - I had one situation where a group member approached me and the rest of my group members and wanted to cheat on the midterm, but I nipped that in the bud!

My instructors were terrific and I gained a good relationship with them. In fact, I still remain in contact with one of them. It seems that most of the instructors are part-time at UMUC, but hold full-time positions at other universities.

The administration was always very easy to deal with and my graduate advisor will respond to e-mail questions within 24 hours in most cases.

I would love to teach for them and will probably continue to take courses with them.

The one thing that isn't obvious from their website is the way their MS in Management degrees will show on a transcript. If you elect to go for the degree, your concentration will actually be what shows. For instance, if you go for the accounting track, your degree/transcript will read "Master of Science in Accounting" and will NOT state the word Management on it. I have confirmed this with the Registrar's office.

Incidentally, I transfered three courses from UMUC to the TAMU-C MBA program with no problem.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the info Carla!

I sent an email to UMUC regarding the designation of the degree and the person told me that my diploma would read MS in Management and the transcript would read MS in Management/Marketing.

Perhaps for marketing it's different. I was told that accounting would show as MS in Accounting.

My graduate certificate is in management with the accounting concentration, but my certificate and transcript both only show accounting and NOT the word management.

Anyway, I hope I was some help to you
