    Hi all,

there has been a long-standing debate around my watercooler at work (at a Federal Agency) about what an employer can disclose about you in a reference check. I checked nearly every online resource that I could possibly find and it seems there is no clear answer.

Are there any HR folks in the building that know anything about this...if so, please shed some light.

By the way, some of the myths about things employers get away with saying are:

    1. Does S/He come to work? Yeah, when S/he is running low on funds or office supplies! (or something along those smart-alecky lines).

    2. Does S/he abuse the leave program! Not really, you would have to have leave available to be able to abuse it!

    3. Is s/he a good employee, honest, forthright, hard-working?
Are you sure you want "Our" Jane Smith?

    4. Has Jane ever been written up? I cannot say, but she only got a dock in pay when she did.

The list is too infinite to list all!

    Regards,

Not in HR but have heard that the companies that demand the most information are the ones least likely to supply it to others.

To protect themselves former employers should only provide verifiable facts, never opinions. "they missed 37 days last year as opposed to a comment on unreliability"
