Yes, as the headlines indicates, these are just a few people who were caught. We know there are many who never get caught.

Probably including people we've all worked for.

Of course, there's lying and then there's LYING.

Just takes the ability to lie with a straight face and no shame whatsoever. I think most employers never bother to check.

I especially like the MIT admissions dean who actually had no degree at all.

    Couldn't agree more.

That was the funniest, but to me, the one that was most befuddling was Jack Grubman, who said he graduated from MIT instead of his real alma mater, Boston University. It's not like BU is some tiny podunk liberal arts college, it's a Tier 1 institution in its own right, and most certainly nothing to be embarrassed about.

I hadn't even read that one because the link in the first post jumps into the middle of the slideshow, and I only went forward. For people who did the same, here's a link to the beginning.

Just to add, we discuss this issue in our local forum at kayaloti.com and was challenged with technical error. We discuss until the passion to teach only. Haha.

My guess is that people who can pull off lying about their education with a straight face are probably capable of more diabolical crimes. It takes the coldness of a sociopath to pull this off. It is more than than just a lie. It is all encompassing deception.

I think there's more than a little truth to this. The first things that come to mind are that either the person thinks a) the lie doesn't matter because I deserve this job anyway,
    b) the lie doesn't matter because the required qualifications are unnecessary, c) lies are ok if you get away with them, d) if I can fool you then you deserve what you get
    e) ???

if you could be assured of an honest answer I'd be interested in knowing how these people justify their lies.

Haha, liars usually think very highly of themselves. They think they deserve everything without any work done. They may even lie their way up the ladder or get some cert, then they deny your opportunity in interview or fail you while they "teach" you. They feel insecurity and fear that you will win them, thats why. Anyone higher than them, they lied again through rumor to bring them down.

But they lead miserable life, fearing everyday that their lies can be broken. They lie one time, got to use 10 lies to cover it up... quite pity actually.

A few weeks ago such a liar was caught in the German parliament. Of course that was huge news here in Germany. Here are two of the very few English articles about that case.

It's astonishing how long her lies worked.

And we in the U.S. have such people as Laura Crabtree Callahan. With bogus degrees from Hamilton University, she somehow got past any vetting at the Department of Defense and moved on to administer a computer system in the White House. Though publicly outed as a phony she later again secured a good position in some similar defense agency. Some people get punished for their wrongs while others get rewarded.

My dad once told me that you can get away with almost anything, provided you act like you know what you're doing. Very accurate observation, in retrospect.

I take this stuff so seriously, I was completing a MOOC certificate course, and even though I was quite certain I was going to pass the final exam, I still waited until I actually had the certificate off the printer and in my hand before I added it to my CV.

The fact that these people are able to get this far is attributed not only to their ability to lie, but the ineptitude of the people who are supposed to be verifying these things. How you can hire a CEO/Dean/Official without checking his/her credentials is just plain inept considering just how easy it is to verify.
