Sure. Someone always wants the top person's job. The higher you are the more enemies you have. This case is alot like that of the Sheriff's candidate who had a St. Regis degree: no one cared until he became a contender for the top spot. It's the risk of being a bigshot.
I have a friend that says he's the Gamma dog. His reasoning is that if you're the Alpha dog, there is always someone trying to take your spot. If you're the Beta dog, you are always trying to topple the Alpha dog. But, if you're the Gamma dog, no one pays attention to what you do, and you can get on with the important things in life.
