This is very interesting. Do you perhaps have any suggestions on good articles / books dealing with this issue you mention?

    Dave,

I get the feeling you really have something against people going for a PhD if they do you meet the "need" based on your standards. What gives?

    Hi Vadro,

Would you know of anyone in Middlesex that I talk to and assess on possibilities of utilizing my 'work' for a PhD by Public works?
I send them an email (via the generic email listed) and sadly - no reply.

    Thanks alot

I care enough to ask the most important questions.

    Vadro,

I tried contacting Middlesex too, but I have yet to receive any response. Could you also provide me with some contact info? Thanks.

    Dave,

I can certainly teach with just a master's but I would like to go further. In academia that means a doctorate. I think I have sufficient motivation for it. It's just a matter of choosing the right program and right field. Of course I also need to keep expenses down.

I used to be ok with calculus. However, stats is not one of my strong points. So, I just couldn't see myself being a co-author, 'expert' in stats for publications.

Take as many stats and research courses as you can. You'll have to defend your research methods.

Who could conceive and write such a heretical treatise? And who would publish it?

    When is one too old?
    • I've heard of people earning doctorates into their 90s.
    • In California seniors over 60 one can take a Ed.D. at Cal State U. campuses with no tuition on a space available basis.
    • A former CEO of my last company earned a Ph.D. in his 50s.
I'm looking for a doctorate that meets my needs (only found one so far that was perfect except I don't want to spend three years in the UK).

    Hmmm...perhaps Blogosphere Inc? I'm not picky. :D

I had a recent conversation with a professional historian regarding just how much amateurs (or to better put it experts from other disciplines with some degree of training in historical research) can contribute in historical research. Some problems with the training of modern historians came up, including what I believe one study called "intellectual parochialism". Maybe not directly related to the topic you mention, and I know classifying history as a social science might be debatable, but I'd like to see the arguments anyway. :)

Tangential thought ahead... A mentor once taught me that innovation (often) comes from outside an established group; of course, the members of the group attribute it to beginner's luck, which, of course, is also true in terms of the innovator's longevity from the group's perspective.

But maybe not if it is historical research - I read three such Ph.D. disertations before doing my history based MAS thesis.
My advisor suggested I turn it into a paper which I did, and perhaps I'll publish using lulu.com (where I have also purchased books by world experts).

The DETC DBA doesn't qualify one to do anything specific in the sense that a regionally accredited doctorate makes one somewhat employable for full-time teaching. Hence, since there is no real demand for DETC DBAs, earning one is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. That doesn't mean that earning a DETC DBA couldn't be interesting or useful for personal growth though.

Right. Yeah. I'm talking about data crunching, which is a requirement in the social and physical sciences.
