This is a bit of a straw poll. I've been having this email discussion with one of my fellow students regarding the need for computers AND internet access as part of their coursework.
I would appreciate hearing from any of you about the extent to which you require both computers and internet access to do your coursework. In other words, if you didn't have internet access for one reason or another, would you be able (or have been able) to complete your courses?

    Thanks,

    Darren.

Frequently I use First Search and other sources to copy journal articles and other academic paoers pertaining to my research. I don't see how there could be two sides to the question of the computer's and internet's value for higher ed.

    Bill:
It was a discussion that we were having about the extent to which traditional (correspondence) distance education should be supported at our institution. I was of the opinion that indeed there is a strong (overwhelming) trend toward requiring computers for distance education, but I wanted to make sure that people who were in areas without internet access (yes, there still are some people like this--due to their location or other factors) or who didn't have computers could still be served for the forseeable future.

Webster University requires students to access their courses via the Internet at least once per week. By seeking out a public access terminal (public library, Internet cafe, ect.) it would be possible to do the course, but most students have either home or work access.
