Anyone out there practicing psychology or counceling (marrige, substance ect or personal) as a private practice who recived their masters degree using distance or non-traditional methods? I have searched these boards and it seems most posters here are buisness oriented. University of Phoenix is approved for licensure but Id like to hear some personal success storys.

I received the MA in Counseling from Liberty University and then took the NBCC exam for the LPC and now have a private practice. Also, Capella University and the University of West Alabama are distance learning options. Check with your state licensing board and make sure that a DL program will meet the requirements and then make sure the program you choose has the necessary components for licensure. Good Luck.

Howard has given you excellent advice. Always check with your state regulatory boards before entering a program. Here are URL's where you will find the various state professional boards:

    counseling

    marriage and family

    social work

    psychology

For addictions licensure or certification criteria in the various states, go here and inquire.

Always check with your state licensing boards. Here in Tennessee, the state psychology board will give a psychologist a license who has attended the APA accredited Fielding Institute. There are several in this state. However they will not license a Masters level psychological examiner. with a DL degree. However, the state Counseling Board makes no such discrimination and will license DL degreed persons as licensed professional counselors (a more flexable degree than a psyche examiner credential). Most states are so far behind the curve regarding distance learning that they will likely only care if it is regionally accredited for a counseling degree or APA accreditted in the case of a psychology degree.

Capella University has a CACREP approved masters level program that fulfills most state licensure laws. CACREP is a very distinguished certification that few brick and mortar schools even get. Most state boards adopt CACREP standards for their licensure.
