This new school was mentioned in the "Remote/online gigs" thread by chrisjm18. Parami University (Yangon, Myanmar) is not yet US accredited, but it is licensed in Washington DC and has a Memorandum of Understanding with Bard College, NY. More details of that in the links.

Parami's mission appears to be educating students in many countries. The school presently offers two Bachelor's programs and some continuing ed. certificates. The degree programs are: (1) Philosophy, Politics and Economics and (2) Data Science.

    The website is https://www.parami.edu.mm/

One of the job postings that Chris found is here - and contains important info. on the school. Good reading even if you don't want to apply for a job there.

Hope DI members find this to be of interest. :)

Tuition at this place is almost $7k per year, making a 4-year degree just under $30k. That's cheaper than some schools, but still pretty expensive for an unaccredited school. Especially one that is supposedly aimed at lower-income countries.

Also, I cannot find out anything about their certificate programs. They do claim to have them, but you can't find out what they are or how much they cost. Their catalog lists an otherwise unmentioned AA, but the word "certificate" does not appear in this context. They mention graduation certificates (high school diplomas) and death certificates, but not what certificates they supposedly offer themselves.

And they accept no transfer credit. Even NationsU will accept transfer credit, where applicable. Not a lot, but they do.

@Johann What an interesting find! For a fledgling Burmese university, it's impressive to see that they already have a dual degree arrangement with an American university.

@Rachel83az Good sleuthing skills! Those prices are quite pricey for what you're getting. I also noticed the lack of details on the certificates and wondered if they're actually running any of them actively right now.

For anyone versed in start-ups, is it normal for universities like Parami to solely be hiring PhD instructors at this stage? From the few ads I saw, it looked like that was the case. I would imagine that a small start-up, with no physical campus to speak of, and (likely) having a limited budget might also want to consider MA or MSc degree holders, but I could be wrong.

Neither could I. I was hoping someone else could. :)

It is expensive, for an unaccredited school. But if you're also getting a degree from Bard College, that's a whole different value proposition! I think it would certainly be OK to charge more to US and developed-world students, than to students in less-developed countries. But there's no indication right now, that it's happening - that I can see, anyway. Let's watch...

There's a lot to read on the Parami site that I missed. What you get to see depends on whether you're "just visiting", "prospective student" etc. I noticed this morning that distance classes are synchronous - they used that exact word. You have to be logged in at the right day and time. They also said the school is on ICT - Indo-China time. Hmmm...

Still reading - nothing about those certificates yet...

Yes, I saw that. The courses for Spring 2023 are listed with the instructors and meeting times.

Without looking closely, here are a couple of observations regarding the cost, accreditation, etc.

It could be that the school is focused on a particular segment that wants to attend there, to be part of it. It's appeal may not be generalized, at least at this point.

It may be focused on bringing foreign students to the US for study. (Or delivering to them via DL. Or both.) Those students will be less concerned about accreditation since the school is licensed and legal. (Which is how it is done almost every where else in the world.) The attraction might be a) coming to the US and b) earning a degree here.

By operating this way, the school is more likely to be successful in navigating its way to becoming accredited, where it might then choose to pursue a wider audience. Or not.

Here's the vibe I get, on this school. I think it's put together with sincerity of purpose - by real academics. Some of the ways in which universities here have to function, to be successful, may still be somewhat unfamiliar to them. But they've forged an excellent partnership with Bard College, a school which can help them a lot. I'm pretty confident the Parami administration and faculty will become familiar with the particular ways in which successful American university operation differs from one in their homeland.

And it may well not be every DI member's No. 1 choice. That's OK. There's a lot of people in the world it probably would suit very well. I wish them every success. And hey, you gotta love the name. At least, I do. :)

Not to be confused with Paramus, NJ.

Right, or Pastrami -- at the deli in Paramus.

I figured Paramus might be named from Latin, in which "Paramus" means "we're preparing" (getting ready) or "let's prepare." But nooo - Wiki tells me it's a Native American word.

"The native Lenni Lenape Indians gave Paramus its name. It comes from the Lenape word “peramsepuss” sometimes translated as “land of the wild turkeys” or “fertile fields where turkeys are found.” A large metal statue of a wild turkey can be found today at the Paramus Park Mall"

So THAT's where "Wild Turkey" whiskey comes from. And all this time I thought it was from the Distillery in Lawrenceburg Kentucky! Ya learn sump'n new every day! :)

Years ago, you could sometimes find a large glass bottle of Wild Turkey on my kitchen table. Not now. :).

My childhood friend, Connie, would drink it with 7-up. (As an adult.) He was visiting us in San Antonio in the mid-80s and left some behind. I've been drinking ever since. I lost track of Connie (I can find no trace of him), but not of bourbon. I've moved on from Wild Turkey, but still....
