I assume that's per annum and not per semester, but it doesn't say.

Makes sense if you view New England as one entity.

In-state vs. out-of-state tuition is all about the government investing in its residents. But New England can see itself as a collective. I do, having lived there. Yes, there were differences--like Nashua being Boston's tax haven--but the similarities always seemed to outweigh the difference. Except Maine.

Wait, why except Maine? I used to visit the Mount Washington Valley area of New Hampshire often growing up where my mom's relatives lived, and it didn't seem much different from Maine.

My brother lives in Maine, he describes it as two different places, northern and southern, with the south being “infected” by Massachusetts transplants. :D

My daughter applied to and was accepted by UMaine-Orono, but I think it was a backup plan if UMass-Amherst didn’t work out. I don’t know what she was worried about, she had a perfect high school GPA and nailed the SAT, she was accepted at every school where she applied.

I worked for Boston University for a few years, specifically to get the free tuition for my kids, the only catch is they have to be accepted on their merits, no preference. She was ready to go for her junior year, but then saw the BU “campus” (or lack thereof, it’s just random buildings along Commonwealth Avenue outside Kenmore Square) and decided to stay at UMass-Amherst.

Just a gut feeling. When I lived in Massachusetts, Maine was referred to a place of a different world.

Amherst is in a lovely area. Forested. Funny thing; it didn't used to be forested. The trees reclaimed that part of the state once farmers gave up and moved to the Midwest.

Back in the 1980’s, UMass-Amherst was a huge party school, it earned them the nickname “ZooMass”, which was completely deserved at the time (I dated a girl who went there and used to visit, so I can attest).

They did a big turnaround, there’s still parties of course, but they’re nationally ranked now (in the 60’s I believe per USN&WR) and not at all the “safety school” they used to be (much like Northeastern).

I dated a girl from Regis. That was almost 50 years ago. I'm sure she's still a...well...you know. I wonder how her husband feels about that?

    Regis College in Weston?

That's a different universe, Weston is actually the wealthiest municipality in Massachusetts. A friend of mine who's on the police department there stopped at an ATM for dinner money, he texted me a photo of a receipt that someone left, it showed a $717,000 balance in the checking account.

Because, whenever you write a personal check for a half-million or so, you want to make sure there's a little safety cushion for incidental purchases.

Yes. It was like dating Billy Joel's Virginia.
