It's the unicorn of DL - a lot of people talk about it but no one has ever seen one. A lot of people have been waiting for one of these programs to appear and I'm going to suggest that you not wait. That bus might not ever arrive. Instead, consider going outside the US. UNE has been mentioned already, certainly UNISA has a program and then there's this one from the UK

It's not the US, but I would suggest looking at the University of Wales Trinity St. David (a new name for our old friend UW Lampeter). They have lots of graduate programs (MA, MPhil and PhD) in a whole variety of humanities subjects. (Several varieties of history, philosophy, religious studies and many more.) I believe that most of them are doable by DL and accept foreign applicants.

I appreciate the help guys. Although I would consider a foreign University, I would need Financial Aid, and I do not think that FAFSA would help me out. I did not want a PhD in Humanities, but Faulkner may be my only viable option..

    Dear Arnold,

US financial aid will cover you if the foreign university has a Federal School Code, and many do.

    Best wishes,

    H.

You may not even need financial aid depending on the international route you take.

There is at least one member, ?44444, doing an international recognized Phd history so affordable no need for financing.

That would be me..and I am Tireman 44444. Yes, it is affordable. I paid $1800.00 for the whole year last year. In my eight years of financing my education, the most has been $2400.00 for the year ( you sign up for yearly courses...in my case....DIS 8193.... and it looks like this when you register and pay..

    15-02-2011 DIS8193 D LITT ET PHIL - HISTORY

Also, from my records...this is what UNISA contributed toward my education. They (UNISA) contributes toward a foreign student's tution the first six years of their education. The contrubutions are less as the years go on. I am past that now...I have paid year seven and year eight totally on my own....this is just a look in for those who care...

    2012-11-16 8235/919 54003/80136 FOREIGN CREDIT 15365.00 -15365.00

    From MyUNISA...

Now, just because it is affordable, do not mean it is easy. You are there at least three years, but most I know are five years and up. I am on year eight. My defense is scheduled for December 15th by Google Hangouts. This is committee ( mine) decision, not a UNISA decision. YMMV, as Rich Douglas would say.

Please forgive my ignorance, as I have only dealt with Fafsa. What is my UNISA? And how in the world is it only $1,800 a year for a PhD? Is it accredited? Again, sorry for my lack of knowledge, I sure do appreciate the help..

UNISA is the University of South Africa, a very, very large distance learning university. It is completely legit and accredited. People reference it frequently because of the number of different degree programs they offer and the cheap pricetag. It is so inexpensive because of the favorable exchange rate of the currency. it's herer

It's a very good school so far as I know and a PhD from there would carry some weight and shouldn't be dismissed by anyone in the know.

Yes, what she said. I am sorry. I forgot to tell you all what UNISA is. I attend the campus of the University of South Africa-Pretoria. Unisa's Muckleneuk Campus is located in Pretoria and is a major landmark of the capital city. It was in 1972 that Unisa moved into its new home on Muckleneuk Ridge having vacated the old quarters in central Pretoria. The complex of buildings was designed by Bryan Sandrock Architects in the 1960s and expresses an international style characterised by monumental proportions and engineering feats like the cantilevered structures. The most striking feature is the long projection from the brow of the hill, supported by a giant steel girder resting on a massive column.( it is a weird building...)

Also in Pretoria is the Sunnyside campus, the main area of student activity. The Florida campus in Johannesburg is Unisa's science campus. The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and some departments of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology is housed here. The science campus contains 12 buildings, a library, two auditoriums and a large study area. It also includes a horticultural centre and a multipurpose research and training facility designed to meet the education and research needs of students in a range of programmes including agriculture, ornamental horticulture and nature conservation

Thank you all for the responses. Are there any other International Universities that offfer a PhD in History that is comparable in price to UNISA? I'm not quite convinced by UNISA..

Or is UNISA a good school? My ultimate goal is to teach here in the US.. will the PhD from UNISA be looked down on by potential employers?

    Best,

    Arnold

Thanks for the help guys. Are there any other International Universities that are respected that have an affordable PhD in History? Or is UNISA in a class on its own? Is UNISA viewed well in the US? I am hoping to be able to teach here stateside once I obtain my PhD.. Thanks again..

UNISA is rather unique but you can look at the Open University of Malaysia.

Sorry to revive a discussion that ended in 2017.

    Has anything changed since then?

Are there any online Phd degrees in History now? I mean in the USA.
