Very good article. I've always agreed that the didactic portion of these types of programs could be taken online, while the clinical portion should remain in person at local hospitals (other healthcare facilities). Now, if we can get them to start accepting online prerequisites more readily than they do currently.

"But the professors themselves say that an estimated 70 percent of medical students do not attend lectures. Clearly, the traditional approach is not working."

Wow, if true then maybe this is the jolt that they need to engage students. I guess we'll see the stats once they get a few semesters under their belt. Hopefully, it's a net positive result.

Great article! I hope the results favor nontraditional learning, this could be an interesting (and beneficial) step forward.

Have you watched the movie Real Genius? This is classic. Day 1, every student present, diligently taking notes. Fast forward, a few tape recorders sit in the seats of a few absent students. Cut forward to mid-term, all tape recorders in seats, no students remain. Cut to final exam, instructor lecturing via tape/projector to an empty room of recorders. :)

When I thought I might go to med school, I used to haunt the Student Doctor network forums. NO ONE attends lecture. In fact, there are threads that discuss which schools use (a certain brand, I can't recall) to upload lectures for the students because they can be replayed at 2x or 3x playback. There were applicants discussing this as a CONSIDERATION when choosing schools. I recall a thread that said no one should attend a certain foreign school because you couldn't playback lectures at anything other than normal speed. I know all this is kinda random and unbelievable, but several students made the case that there is just too much to learn in too short of a time, and lecture attendance was an incredibly inefficient use of time when you could instead study on your own for a few hours, plus listen to a lecture in half the time. I get it.

    Also, thumbs up for innovation.
