Purdue University is adding an online master’s degree in nuclear engineering to its highly ranked online engineering graduate programs designed for professional engineers looking to enhance their knowledge and skills and advance their careers.

Beginning with the fall 2021 semester, the Master of Nuclear Engineering (MNE) program will be offered and taught by the same faculty who teach on Purdue’s flagship campus. The on-campus nuclear engineering program is rated among the best in the field.

“I am thrilled that we are now able to provide the same excellent education to those who wanted to advance their knowledge but couldn’t because they couldn’t be on campus,” said Seungjin Kim, the Capt. James F. McCarthy, Jr. and Cheryl E. McCarthy Head and Professor of Nuclear Engineering. “With the new online Master of Nuclear Engineering degree program, they will learn from our renowned faculty from anywhere and earn an advanced Purdue nuclear engineering degree.[/Quote]

Would be interesting if they consider the growing demand to be real expanded positions versus simply training programs to replace the currently aging out workforce. Unfortunately or fortunately, our nuclear plants are aging out and with no real active plans to replace them, outside of one lone exception.

Very unfortunately, if we're even slightly serious about decarbonizing the economy.

Is a background check part of the admission process? :D

If you think the background check is fun… wait to you read the NRC Fatigue regulations! Had a large number of traveling workers drop their unescorted sec clearances after those rules were promulgated.

I was an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) call-taker for a while, and we had an NRC-contractor as one of our clients. If the person had unescorted clearance and any kind of substance use/mental health/crisis intervention risk we had a verrrry long flowchart we had to follow to assess their risk before passing them to a counsellor to continue the risk assessment and action plan, which included a report to the employer. I only took one NRC staffer call in the year I was there, and they did not have unescorted access. I can see why nobody would call though, it sounded career-ending.

Never encountered anyone in my crews with EAP issues that were brought to my attention. Had a couple over the years run into issues with their credit scores, actually more issues with that than anything else. Always baffled me but higher wages don’t necessarily lead to financial responsibility.
