Online DBA in Australia

Need good and reasonable online DBA program in Australia. I would appreciate any feedbacks.

Credit Transfer

Is there a DBA program where I might be able to transfer my MBA credits? In addition, it is reasonable. Thanks.

 

Southern Queensland is about 40K AUD, I don't know if this is reasonable to you as it is more expensive than some American options.

The program is 5 years and has no credit transfer for an MBA. This is not really an online program but an external doctorate. This means that you don't actually follow online courses but conduct research under the supervision of a supervisor via external study.

I don't know Charles Sturt but I suppose it must be about the same type of program.

Price for Australian doctorates has gone up and they are not longer a cheap option.

 

You might want to check Newcastle, they seem to allow credit transfer with an MBA and it looks like an online program.

Does Deakin University offer any Doctoral degree online? I couldn't find any information on it, but Johnie's Distance Learning Page states there is....

 

They offer a professional doctorate, the key term is not distance learning but "external" research. Many programs have the "external research" option, as may doctorate programs are research based you don't actually have to take courses so it doesn't really mater if you are on campus or off campus.

Bear in mind that is a common practice at Australian Universities not to have a "viva" dissertation defense. Most Australian schools do not require you to go to defend a dissertation as the defense is asynchonous. In few words, all the doctorates in Australia have the potential to be "distance" learning, the problem is that some prestigious schools do not take part time students so your options are limited.

Most of the second, third and fourth tier schools would accept part time external doctorate students but you have to ask. The process is not so straight forward so it can be very difficult to enroll if you don't know the process. The problem is that not all the schools are DL friendly so a lot of their processes require face to face contact. Charles Sturt, Southern Queensland and other similar schools are more DL oriented so facilitates registration as external student but technically you can enroll at many schools as external student.

If you want to enroll at a prestigious school in Australia, the best would be to travel at least once to get the contact and then continue via DL. The main problem with PhDs is that you need to find a supervisor before being accepted. It is very hard to make a contact via email, many professors won't respond or won't take you seriously if you propose them an external approach, I think it could be easier if you actually meet at least once.

 

Thanks RFVale.... hmm.. I like the name Deakin, but CSU is not quite my favorite.

 

Deakin is DL friendly, I remember that I contacted them and they sent me the information for a D.Tech. I did no consider them as they were very expensive, their program cost around 40K in 1999 so I suppose that now is even more expensive.

CSU is also not very cheap but the DBA was priced very low when it started, the program was under 20K and was told that could be completed in only 4 years. I applied but they did not have a supervisor within my area of research (IS) at the time.

Neither CSU, Deakin nor USQ are considered top Universities in Australia. Australian National, Queensland and Monash seem to be the most prestigious down there, however, none of these schools have problems getting doctoral students so negotiating a part time external doctorate with any of them is close to impossible.

 

University of Southern Queensland seems like a good school. Anyone with any experience with this school?

 

I graduated from this school with a DBA. The program is meant to be completed in 5 years but it took me 6 years. Most of the program is research unless you want to specialize in different area than your MBA, if this is the case you need to complete extra 4 MBA courses that can take an extra year to complete. The program used to be cheap but recently has increased in price to 30 to 40K AUD depending on the amount of course work you need to take.

There were new requirements for traveling to Australia but I don't see them anymore so I'm not too sure about this so you would need to contact the school. The school is looking for AACSB accreditation but still waiting to have enough qualified faculty, I received a newsletter about this but I'm not sure when they will apply for full accreditation.

 

Deakin is named after Alfred Deakin, the second Prime Minister of Australia.

It's probably just my impatience but did anyone figure out the cost of this program (in $US)?

The program is 260 units, each 10 units is $1990

The full program is 26 x1990 = 51740 AUD = 36K USD

More expensive than some of the popular online schools. You might save some money if you get the maximum transfer from your MBA.

 

From my understanding, Newcastle DBA can be studied online through GradSchool.com.au. Newcastle offers its online programs and courses through GradSchool.com.au and the degrees & certificates are granted by Newcastle.

One will need to study 240 units (a course represents 10 units) for DBA. That is, 8 courses (80 units) in Year 1, 8 courses (80 units) in Year 2, 2 courses (20 units) and dissertation (60 units) in Year 3. One may complete it in 3 years (full-time) or 6 years (part-time).

However, one with MBA degree (completed within the last 10 years) can exempt from 80 units in Year 1. That means one can complete the 160-unit DBA program by online (part-time) studies in 4 years.

Average course cost = A$2,730 (US$2,140)
Full DBA program (240 units) = 24 x A$2,730 = A$65,520 (US$51,360)
Full DBA program (160 units) = 16 x A$2,730 = A$43,680 (US$34,240)
Three months ago, the cost would be 20% cheaper!

The ONLY AACSB accredited Australian DBA is offered at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) but its only open for Australian residents.
