I am searching for a good cache of 1 credit courses for my oldest. He's in need of one more credit to finish up his bachelor's degree this semester. I've done a lot of Internet searching and haven't come up with much in the way of one credit courses. I was hoping that others on the forum might have a better idea where to search. The only criteria is that the courses must be RA and online is preferred.

I did find 3-4 courses at Drake University. They seemed more for teachers than undergrads majoring in marketing and psych.

    Thanks, Bing

Bing I had the same problem. It took 120 hours to graduate and they also required a 4 hour lab course in the undergrad program....which throws a kink in the chain.

I never could find a one or two hour course, but then again I halfheartedly searched. Since I had "loaded up" on /Clep/Dates exams for the max of 30 hours beforehand, I had no other alternative than to bite off another 3 hour course. It seems everyone goes over by an hour or two. Its kinda' like leaving the waitress a tip.

Clep/Dantes would be a quick and dirty/ inexpensive way out.
    Good luck,
    Gavin

When I was in college (B&M) I found myself in a similar situation. My problem wasn't graduation, rather I needed the extra credit to get full time VA benefits.

I looked through the course catalog and found a number of options. One semester I took basic sailing (2 credits). Another semester I took scientific glassblowing (I was a chemistry student so this made sense). Another good and useful course to take is first aid. Many community colleges offer this and although it may be more than one credit it is a lifesaving skill.

These are all 1 hour courses that would probably need to be transcripted for credit. They are also lower level courses. Still it might be worth a shot.

These are not 1 credit, but there are many 2 credits that are totally independent study, VERY cheap, and grad level. These are offered through Colorado State. I know he needs undergrad, but it's worth checking to see if they would work, many colleges will take grad credit for an undergrad. Go to www.learner.org and you will find a tab for earning grad credit. Essentially, you watch the videos- submit payment (around $250)- and then submit the homework packet.

Thomas Edison State College offers a 1 credit course on Jane Austin. By the time you pay the fees, you could be looking at $300.

Finally, community colleges sometimes offer 1 credit classes too.

    Good Luck!

Yeah, FEMA/EMI courses is where it's at.

Take a 1 credit course with them for free and then transfer it to Fredericksburg CC for $60...BINGO you have a 1 credit course.

Thanks all for our suggestions. I'm not sure how acceptable FEMA is but I'll have him ask his advisor and see. If it only costs 60 dollars then that's one cheap credit for him(well, for me since i pay).

I'm pretty sure the American Red Cross/American Heart Association CPR certification is ACE-certified for one credit, and you'll learn a very useful skill to boot.

    Also, BYU Independent Study offers some 0.5 credit courses in Exercise Science which could be combined for 1 credit;

    http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/select.cfm?type=univ&subject=138

Of course there is no maximum number of credits allowable in a degree program I'm aware of; I would just take another CLEP/DANTES, have 2 extra credits on the transcript, and be done with it.

    1) FEMA credit, once transcriptd at Frederick Community College (not Fredericksburg), will not be FEMA credit. It will be a 1 credit course from FCC.

    2) BYU offers numerous 2 credit courses.

    3) If your college accepts ACE credit, most do, Penn Foster has a lot of 1 credit courses for about $60.

    Thanks for the correction.

I guess living in TX has me confused (easy to do).

Thanks so much for the info. He is going to do a grad credit from Drake. They offer a number of one credit courses. They are bent toward education but his advisor did approve it quickly.

BYU would be out of the question While I am a BYU grad, even I couldn't take a class there anymore...and neither can my children. Once you resign from the LDS Church you are no longer eligible to take BYU courses(that doesn't stop them from sending me requests for money or calling me with requests for money). They count you as worse than an apostate at that point.

Penn Foster represents a good bargain. However, his school only takes RA credit per his advisor.

Most institutions, as many of you will know, offer some form of independent learning. Essentially, you enter into a learning contract with an instructor who is more of a facilitator. In my case, I knew exactly what I wanted to research. The workload, then, determined the amount of credit.

[N.B.: I completed a 1-credit independent study course on mass transit, as part of the project, visited and researched in Japan (self financed ;$), then delivered a paper.]

No problem. The only reason I know is because I live in Frederick, Maryland, not far from Frederick Community College and the Emergency management Institute.
