I’m always struck by degreeinfo posters who think, well, it must be because I was just so inquisitive. There are a lot of inquisitive people out there.

It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

Just because you type a few lines a day on a website doesn’t mean you’re an expert, somebody along the line gave you some real information. There was a great blogger somewhere in your life.

Somebody invested in online schools that you took courses at. So you have an online degree - -- you didn’t earn that. Somebody else made that happen.

    -----------

PS – everyone relax I am just playing around, I still might vote for the guy I haven’t decided yet. but you have to admit this was one of the stupidest speeches in the history of our planet.

I wouldn't go THAT far. I do think it was a horribly-phrased statement when he said "you didn't build that," but the general sentiment wasn't really that inappropriate.

He should have, however, phrased it more clearly.

The fact is that hard work, intelligence, etc. alone are not sufficient. If you take the most entrepreneurial person on the planet and place him in Mogadishu, you will not have the same results that you would get in Seattle.

That being said, you can't discount the personal effort, as it is just as important.

I agree with you in principle, however even if you assume he was talking about roads and bridges, why was it so important to single out small business as the people that didn’t build that? Why not firemen, teachers, cab drivers, doctors, politicians, why the single focus. It was just a bizarre statement wrapped around this ‘you think you’re so smart’ language that seems like it is inviting an argument and was an attack. However like I said I think it is more amusing on all sides than anything else.

I think he just got fired up and let his mouth get away from him. Elizabeth Warren's (of Mass.) conversation along the same lines was much, much more appropriate and less antagonistic.

Because if he'd singled out all the taxpayer largess that big business gets, it would piss off too many of his corporate contributors.

I actually worked construction for 2 years right out of high school. Now I am a small business owner working in online education. I have to admit that things seem all mixed up and we seem to be mad at the wrong people now a days..
