While waiting for an eye exam today, I noticed that the doctor had earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from NSU (1999). His undergrad degree was from UNC-CH. After completing the eye exam I inquired about NSU, which resulted in a nice ten minute conversation. He stated that NSU graduated 110 from the DO program alone in 1999, and that the school is ever expanding. I thought it was interesting conversation, since NSU has gotten criticism from time to time on this forum. It appears however that NSU is doing quite well.
That was a very nice complement. Mr. Me Again once stated that his professors (NSU doctorate) is one of the best in his school (paraphrased). I wish to state categorically that criticisms of NSU are mostly rooted in ignorance. NSU is definetly not Harvard but it is what it is. It is an average on-campus/DL school.
A minor point is that the Doctor of Optometry is abbreviated OD, not DO. The DO is actually the abbreviation for Doctor of Osteopathy. In this case the difference is especially important because NSU also grants the DO degree through its Health Professions Division. In fact, it was the merger of the Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine and Southeastern University of the Health Sciences with Nova University in 1994 that formed Nova Southeastern University.
Russell - your point underscores another thing about NSU that seems to go unnoticed. The school is quite large - 17,000 students + in a wide range of programs. Some are on-campus (law, medicine, optometry, psychology, oceanography, undergrad, etc.) and others are DL (education, business, and computer science). As a result, a discussion of NSU makes little sense without talking about which part of NSU you're interested in. I've graduated from the business school, for example. Discussion of the quality of my program bear little or no relevance to someone in education or a health field. Regards - Andy
Sorry for the lapse, Gus. I would hate to go for an eye exam and end up on medication for brittle bones.
Re: Re: Nova Southeastern University: Doctor of Optometry Andy, I have argued before that it is paradoxical that they are criticized for being a DL school, but according to any information given to my by NSU, it is one of the schools (in the DL circle) that require the most residency. Also, from what I been able to determine, many of those in the education field in Florida have degrees from NSU. I think they are on the cutting edge of education. One can become just about anything with a degree from NSU. Just my thoughts.
Re: Re: Re: Nova Southeastern University: Doctor of Optometry Darren - I have to agree. In my DBA program I spent some 75 days in residence (what with weekends in class, week long sessions in Floriday and Washington DC and comprehensives). I found these times to be very valuable - you can't beat face to face time with peers and faculty. Regards - Andy
Overall, Nova Southeastern University is cosidered to be a great school. My education experience at NSU was very good. Just like myself, most of my graduating class after graduation, (MPA 97) were either promoted/hired at high-level government jobs, ( City Manager, Asst City Manager, etc.) NSU is very well respected within the State of Florida as an innovative institution that offers a wide range of programs.
