LPNs Often Fare Better Than Some Degree Earners | allnurses

One of the reasons I pursued my degree is because I was getting sick and tired of people thinking I lacked critical thinking skills because I didn't attend college. Truth be told I never wanted to pursue my RN. It was not my passion. I didn't particularly enjoy nursing but being an LPN paid the bills. I was ok having someone else be chief and I could be a worker bee and just leave those problems at the end of the day. Fine with that. I ended up receiving my bachelors degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior and studying what I enjoyed. I also realized my little technical diploma paid me above and beyond what my peers with certain college degrees earned. I am not embarrassed anymore. I have decided to embrace it.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. Common wisdom is being rethought when it comes to the world of work as we knew it.

While there are vo-tech programs that lead to higher salaries than some 4-year programs, the article posted on that forum was terribly written. It compared the salary of LPNs to an overall employment rate of new college graduates (in 2012 when we were still recovering from the recession). Why not compare the salaries of LPNs to the salaries of particular majors? Why not compare the unemployment rates of LPNs with the unemployment rates of particular majors?

    Good for you!
My mom was a nurse for over 40 years before she passed away in 2009. She earned her RN the old fashioned way, through a hospital based diploma program. She spent the first part of her career in peds, the majority as an ICU/CCU charge nurse, and later in retirement at an assisted living facility (which I'm sure I don't have to tell you are run by LPNs). My mom didn't have a college degree, but at her funeral, I was blown away by the number of people who came up to me and told me how no matter where they worked, she was always the smartest nurse on the floor. (and my mom was a lot of things, but she wasn't a friendly, and warm person- she was a straight shooter get it done woman. No one came up to tell me how wonderful of a person she was lol)
I'm sure with the push for BSNs, even an ADN is being looked down on in industry- I'm sure you've dealt with your share of people being an ass thinking you didn't know your job. Mom mom talked about that all the time. (especially how she saved new doctors from practically killing patients) I don't know if you can ever get respect from everyone no matter what degree you have, but if it helps, I respect you. Good job!

Stupid me. I've always assumed nurses have college degrees. I know their medical course work is sure as hell not easy. Oh wait, never mind, i see you said your mom get a diploma through a hospital.
