Somebody at another forum brought this up in another thread.

NAU | Personalized Learning | Frequently Asked Questions

I was thinking about the possibility of getting a 2nd BA from here but I was just told in an email from NAU that I would need to complete 54 units. But they said it can be done in 6 months but cautioned me that it would be very difficult obviously. 6 months only would cost $2,500. I have no experience with competency based formats. What do you guys think?

FYI I noticed NAU also has a lot of other online degree programs. Any thoughts on NAU online degrees as a whole, I hardly hear anything about this school on this forum? How does NAU compare to ASU for online degrees?

Well it's not going to have the same name recognition as ASU, but it's a decent directional school. Not many outside of Arizona are going to know about it. The only reason I'm aware of the school is because a high school classmate ran track for them.

ASU tends to have hidden fees with their online degrees that add up fast. NAU is pretty straightforward with their tuition costs.

NAU’s online degrees are all accredited and are very reputable around Arizona. I have friends that completed online courses through NAU and they loved it.

Competency-based programs are really new, so it’s hard to make a general assumption on it. Have you taken the quiz on their website to see if the program is right for you?

Thank you both for your responses. So it seems like although NAU is not as recognized as ASU, it may be a cheaper alternative.

And I have taken the quiz on their website, but it's not really much help.

This is strange. I signed up for their information packet and got an email from them to visit a link for my student profile where i could upload transcripts etc.

The link was displayed on my Android phone with no problem. But when i sit down to my PC the link was just plain text. Tried using Chrome, Explorer and Mozilla no luck with the link. I can only access it through my mobile phone. tried copying and pasting the link from my mobile to a separate email and i ended up some error.

Are these 54 units these quarter units? Many schools only require 30 semester units for a second bachelor degree (provide all the degree requirements are met).

    No they're 54 semester units.

That seems a bit extreme for a second bachelors. Usually schools only require between 30-45 semester units for a second bachelors. I sent them an email yesterday, but I haven't heard back yet. I'm kicking the tires a bit on their BA IT program, but I wouldn't pay more than $2,500 for it (since I don't really need it). I could probably rock 30 credits in 6 months, but definitely not 54! If these personalized learning programs had been available 4-5 years ago, I would have been all over it...

In the end, I'll probably go in a complete different direction and pursue a Master of Public Health from National University (they just received CEPH accreditation and they don't require the GRE - plus, just 18 months to complete the entire program). If If I don't make up my mind soon and stop bringing up different degree programs, my wife is going to kill me!

I agree. I'd probably go for a 2nd bachelors in Small Business Administration if I could complete it in 6 months for $2,500 or 1 year $5,000 tops. However, the communication I've gotten from them so far has been extremely VAGUE which is quite disappointing.

I'm in the same boat. I've been spending so much time attending infosessions and researching different programs all over the spectrum such as EMBA's, online MBA's, Flex MBA's, MS Liberal Studies, and an MA Communications. I hope I'm not doing this for 2 more years and still in the same boat not having at least enrolled in a program.

Well, it took me 16 years to complete my B.S. (although I was really only actively working on it for half of that time). I've spent the last three years since graduating looking over various graduate programs (heck, who am I kidding - I've been researching graduate programs for at least 10 years now)! I've been all over the map. Here is a small sampling of graduate programs that I've given serious consideration:

    MPH
    MS Epidemiology
    MS Psychology
    PhD Psychology
    MS Health Informatics
    MS Radiologic Sciences (Dosimetry)
    MS Biology
    MS Pharmacology
    MD
    DO
    PharmD
    DMD/DDS
    MS Occupational Therapy

You get the point! I've recently come to the realization that I don't want to have my family put up with me leaving my full-time job with a really good salary for a graduate program which would take anywhere between 1-8 years to complete with little to no income during that time. Whatever I do now will have to be online and relatively inexpensive. I'm probably heading toward the MPH and will hope to parlay that into something more interesting from a career standpoint.

Best of luck with your decision on a program.

LOL! Nice to know there's somebody else out there just as confused as I am. Wow PharmD can be done online? I didn't know that. Good luck in your decision too. Let's see who can make up their mind first =)

And here, I had seriously considered that many schools for MBA/MS-IT/MS-ITM. So I'm not the only one who takes forever degree-shopping. :D

Yep, there sure is... Creighton University offers an online PharmD (with on-campus requirements). There are no online Osteopathy or Dental schools, though there are a couple of legitimate, online MD schools in the Caribbean (Oceania and IUHS).
