My own theory is politically incorrect insofar as it casts aspersions on those who choose such a route (my sense here is that it is currently politically incorrect to cast aspersions on anyone, regardless of what they do or espouse.) I believe that people choose the degree mill route because either 1) they do not believe that they would be accepted for admission to a legitimate doctoral program or 2) they do not believe they are capable of completing a legitimate doctoral program, even if they were to be accepted or 3) both of the above. My own belief is that the number of people who are honestly unaware that they are buying a bogus PhD is remarkably small. I have no evidence for this but I believe that anyone who has spent even a semester in a real college has some real idea of what it takes to earn a PhD. Writing a check and picking the font for your diploma doesn't quite make it.

Sorry; "doubtful" meant "diploma mill". I was being politically correct. (The joke around here is to call criminals "morally challenged")

I have posted in support of the unaccredited schools from time to time. Such a path is legitimate under certain, limited circumstances, IMHO.
