I hope they stop paying her salary immediately.

"The reason she missed her court appearance last week was because she had been living in a temple with monks in the mountains of Thailand since May 3, she had texted to her lawyer."

I'd have said I was abducted by forest clowns but I like this story better.

Apparently "they" won't. The article says she has continued to receive pay ($173,700/yr.) because she remains an elected judge. She's not allowed to hear cases, so here's the alternate "make-work" plan for now:

" Her supervisors, state Supreme Court Judge Craig Doran and City Court Judge Teresa Johnson, told Astacio Monday that she will required to conduct research in the courthouse law library Monday through Friday, whenever court is in session."

Sure. Why not? Here's the relevant part of the Constitution of the State of New York, regarding impeachment of judges in NY City-wide courts. OML, you can find anything on the Internet!

"b. Judges of the court of claims, the county court, the surrogate’s court, the family court, the courts for the city of New York established pursuant to section fifteen of this article, the district court and such other courts as the legislature may determine may be removed by the senate, on the recommendation of the governor, if two-thirds of all the members elected to the senate concur therein.

    c. No judge or justice shall be removed by virtue of this section except for cause, which shall be entered on the journals, nor unless he or she shall have been served with a statement of the cause alleged, and shall have had an opportunity to be heard. On the question of removal, the yeas and nays shall be entered on the journal. (Amended by vote of the people November 6, 2001.)"
