I am looking into New Charter for my son and would really like to hear from anyone who has any experience with their courses structure and what to expect.

I realize they are DETC accredited and don't want to discuss the limitations of that.

My interest is in their Associate's of General Studies program. It is unique in that you can actually graduate from Patten University, which is RA. They offer dual enrollment for the program and I find that very interesting. The tuition is reallt awesome as well.

Does anyone have any experience with this school?

This is true. However, Patten's regional accreditation is not currently in the best standing, since Patten has been on probation with WASC since Feb 2010.

Patten was sold to UniversityNow (which also owns New Charter) in 2012. Presumably UniversityNow is working to get Patten out of probation. WASC apparently plans to reconsider Patten's status in June, so if all goes well there could be an improvement at that time.

New Charter University, in its current format, was only launched last year (although it has a longer history as "Andrew Jackson University"). One 2012 news story noted that the school only had a "few hundred" students". So you may have trouble finding NCU students or alumni to talk to -- simply because there may not be very many of them out there.

For most people, the word "university" brings to mind a large institution with thousands, or tens of thousands, of students. That may be typical in the RA world, but I suspect that it is not usually the case with DETC "universities". DETC doesn't disclose enrollment numbers for accredited schools, and exact numbers are hard to find, but I suspect that they are more typically in the dozens or hundreds. There may be a few big DETC schools (like Columbia Southern) but I would bet that most of them are relatively small.

Columbia Southern University, Ashworth College, Penn Foster, are all big ones. Given that the staple study method at those three schools are all pretty similar (Degrees can be earned through independent study), I suppose they could be considered the DETC's "Big 3", or perhaps even NA's "Big 3".

They used to have feature wherein you can register and complete a course without paying anything. Ofcourse, you won't get a credit without ultimately paying, but this way you can learn more about their courses and see if it's for you or not.
If they don't have this feature now, you may chat with them and ask. They have friendly admission staff

Note: I am not affiliated with them in anyway. I tried to sample a course few months back, but decided not to continue due to my circumstances.

When they were AJU they required two proctored exams per course via ProtorU a $30 at the time per exam. In comparison to Aspen that has only couple of proctored exams.
The course work is on line , submitting assignments per lesson, usually 10 to 12 lessons per course.
They make you learn the material and do a good job.
I took couple classes at the time for the MBA and was impressed with the instructor, and huge amount of work. Due to my work load I couldn't take more then one class at one time.
I do recommend RA school first if NA DETC will work for you then go for it.
    Be ready to study hard.
