My understanding (and it is only my understanding from hearing the story from someone who has been at NCU for over 7 years) was that first the university was going to be a branch campus of the owner's California institution (which is unaccredited). It was called-I think-Southern California School of Professional Studies. The HLC said you cannot have a branch campus in Arizona under HLC and get accreditation from us. So the owner changed it to North Central to copy North Central Association, and then changed it to one word-Northcentral when they found another school at the North Central name. I do understand that the owner recently changed the California school name to something other than S C U P S as it was known as a diploma mill and they want to get national accreditation from an organization known as DTEC. Again, this is just what I heard. Part of the problems for NCU with the accreditors as I read it on the HLC site was governance, conflict of interest with the California school (I "assume" this means transfering money from one to the other or using NCU employees to do S C U P S work, etc.) and sole ownership making all the decisions rather than having a real governance structure in place. The accreditors don't like to see a sole owner have control over a president and pull strings. Anyway, take it for what it is worth-just what this employee told me, as she has been around since almost the beginning.

    1. SCUPS is unaccredited but definitely not a mill.
    2. Do you really mean DTEC or maybe DETC?
    3. SCUPS is now known as California Southern University.

You are right-DETC. I am not that familiar with them as they are a national accrediting body as I understand it, and I only know about regional accreditation.
It is hard for me to think of a school that has neither regional nor even a national as not being a diploma mill, but that is just my bias. I only am relating what was told to me by an employee who just recently resigned and was at NCU for over 7 years. They had worked for the owner for both NCU and California Southern (as I guess S C UPS is now named), and said the quality of work by learners was really poor and they only went only (moving from correspondence to online last year). So, in the end, all of this is opinion and personal preference for a consumer. I went to the CAL SOuthern web site and saw their programs, and see that they are approved by the state of California and folks can sit for the bar, sit for licensing with their psychology degrees, etc. I do know this person at NCU told me that the owner had fired three presidents there in about a three year time frame, so I guess what is happening at NCU is par for the course. Take care.

Prescott, if the map serves me correctly, is in central Arizona. The accrediting body is North Central, so the naming of the university is quite a play on region and accreditation. I just find it funny that an online university would geographically identify with a region, so my guess is that it was more of an identification with the accrediting body. But then UoP's headquarters are in Phoenix and it didn't seem to hold them back form global outreach.

I take offense to that statement. Did your friend say the quality of work turned in by NCU learners was similar to your sentence??

Hey dbahomeland, do you have a "doctor of business administration" degree and, if so, from where? The reason I ask is because it's implied in your user name. Pray tell? :)
