So Rep. Greene says we need a divorce in this country. Presumably her state, Georgia, would withdraw along with other deep Red states and...what...form some sort of confederacy? I don't know how anxious Georgians might be to repeat their greatest ever mistake but I never got the idea Rep Greene is much of an historian. Hard to really understand American history if you ignore, you know, "critical race theory". The Deep South still harbors a good many "lost cause" adherents.

So what about it? Assume a random state, Florida perhaps, establishes an ideology driven government that has no fear of federal authority and offers no deference to the U.S. constitution. Would Washington D.C. send in troops to enforce federal law against local authorities? The last clear instance would have been 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Eisenhower had to be forced to it but he did it. Does President Biden have the moral courage?

There's no historical guarantee that the Great American Experiment will endure forever. Precedent suggests that it won't though the death will be long, slow and painful.

Hunh. Maybe Canada will adopt New Mexico. That would give Johann a warm place to spend the winter!

Maybe. I like the idea WAY better than Florida, as things go there, lately. :(

Georgia voted for Biden. So, what, it'll go with the Blue states?

    Freaks.

MTG is crazy. She spouted QAnon nonsense. She said that Jewish space lasers were starting California wildfires. This national divorce nonsense is just par for the MTG course. The sad story from my point of view is that MTG makes the folks in her district look REALLY bad.

Divorce? Sure. Who gets the trailer?

Of the 10 states most dependent upon the federal government, 9 are red. (The exception is Nosborne's home state, presumably because of its high Native population and the federal government's obligations to them.)

Not sure it's a bad thing.

That does contribute to our oversized share of federal largess but NM is also just really poor and always has been.

Everyone, please travel to New Mexico and go see the wonderful Carlsbad Caverns. And spend lots of money while there on vacation. Carlsbad Caverns is gorgeous and simply amazing. If you've been to some other natural caverns, do not think that you've experienced what Carlsbad Caverns has to offer. Some of the chambers are just absolutely huge.

Carlsbad Cavern includes a large limestone chamber, named simply the Big Room, which is almost 4,000 ft (1,220 m) long, 625 ft (191 m) wide, and 255 ft (78 m) high at its highest point. The Big Room is the largest chamber in North America

Wow! What a spectacular place for a Company to rent, for a Board Meeting. Has anyone told Elon Musk? :)

Yes, please, for numerous reasons including Johann coming to the SW! Canada does seem to have a lot of great things happening too.

Well I think that Elon Musk is less than 25 stories tall so he would probably fit in Carlsbad Cavern?

Well yeah, but he'd probably have to leave his EGO outside! :)

I'd like the SW. Spanish and Navajo...what's not to love? ¡Buenos días! :) Yáʼátʼééh! :)
Quesadillas or mutton stew? Decisions, decisions.... :) I'll bring my 8 guitars... I hear everybody in Nogales AZ plays guitar. That so?

I cannot say on the guitars in Nogales, but they are generally popular in the region.

If you do get down this way though I would highly suggest making a trip from Nogales to Tubac for a restaurant called Elvira's. I would literally travel between states just to go again.

As far as Navajo, I could connect you with a few Native speakers of the language. Meanwhile, have you watched the show Dark Winds? If not I highly recommend that along with another show called Reservation Dogs. The Navajo language is used in Dark Winds, but not in Reservation Dogs... but the writers for it were so fantastic with the comedy.

Also, I will echo the sentiment of others that Carlsbad caverns is pretty amazing. I'm also a very fan of White Sands.

Thanks, SweetSecret. That whole post was like a breath of fresh SW air! I looked Tubac up - these days it's kind of an artists' colony, I guess. Those artists must eat pretty well, with a place like Elvira's! In a town of around 1,000 people. too! I thought at first "Tubac" might be a short form for Tuba City - it isn't. That town is much larger - Majority Navajo, minority Hopi, as I understand.

Thanks for the offer of connection with Native Speakers. When I'm ready, maybe - and I'm sorry to say I'm not, at this point. I listen to Native speakers on the Internet, but I don't want to frustrate any, at this stage. I don't have TV any more - but I'll see what I can do about connecting with Dark Winds. Maybe at my son's place.

Carlsbad Caverns? Brought back a childhood memory, from 1949. As soon as I could read, I had access to the bookshelf at home, in England. There was a kind of Geographical one-volume encyclopedia and when I was about six, I encountered the article on Carlsbad Caverns. My six-year old mind wondered for a moment who Carl was - and why were they so bad? They looked nice! I was very impressed by the black-and-white photos and thought maybe one day when I was grown-up, I'd go there. But I didn't. :)

New Mexico really is "enchanted" meaning frozen in time and place. Every surrounding state shows significant population increases and economic growth but not New Mexico. We actually lost population in the last couple of years I think. Willa Cather got it right. Nothing ever changes here.

All of this fantasy depends for survival on federal defense spending and oil and gas, two things our rather left leaning political establishment decries. Decries with much hand wringing but quietly they know the fairy tale of the goose and the golden eggs.

Now why NM continues in a state of suspended animation isn't obvious to me. If I were Governor I don't know what I might do to light a fire here. There's a sort of public malaise that after 40 years of living here I somehow share but don't understand. What is more, this malaise dates back to colonial times. Even the rural Spanish is ancient.

Arizona is a totally different world. I don’t know why.
