I just started using Linkedin because their is a group that is pertinent to my work. I have the free membership which is limited. The next level costs $288 per year (and there are higher cost memberships). The $288 is too much for me. So Linkedin gets some income from membership fees.

More than 100,000,000 Americans (and more than 300,000,000 people globally) are members of LinkedIn. It's not hard to see how access to their database could be very valuable to certain people, like HR professionals.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that the same model is applicable to MOOCs. Sure, an HR professional may be happy to pay hundreds of dollars per year for access to LinkedIn's database. But does anyone really want to pay lots of money to access a database of students taking introductory college courses ?
