This article is sort of related to why the founder of edX chose to make and keep the organization non-profit.

Non-profit or for-profit, hardly anyone wants to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for credentials employers don't value. MOOCs are largely unregulated, so employers can't easily gauge their quality. I believe this is why Coursera and edX are getting into the degree business. As I mentioned in another thread, they've realized that certificates of completion can't replace degrees.

Mooc is overated and this is coming from a person who did a lot of them. Unless the mooc is leading to something, then it like any other educational information on the net .

I think they might have some worth for studying for CLEP/DSST or a certification exam, but I'm not paying for that. You can audit courses for free at Coursera and edX. If they start charging people who don't want certificates, they can always go to YouTube for free or buy used books. Two of the universities I've attended have deals that give students free access to Lynda.com.

I have premium membership to Linkined. One of the benefits is acess to Lynda courses. There is nothing special about them accept being organized and handy. One may achieve the same thing from free youtube videos.

I think most serious people on DI hate diploma mills.

I dunno. I despise, revile and condemn them sometimes, often shun them - and a fat lot of good it does. But true hatred? No, because it's too fine and precious an emotion to be wasted on mills. Then again, how serious am I?

I despise people with diploma mills degrees. It is such an unfair thing to do to honest students who toiled many years earning a geniune degree.

Yes it is, but I don't imagine people with bogus degrees see themselves as doing anything to honest students. They're out to screw the "system" are likely oblivious to any such group - and could care less what happens to them. To them it's "screw the system - or forever be the system's bitch."

By all means despise them anyway. I do, as well. They deserve it. Screw them.
