    Good day all,

I've received a conditional acceptance to a graduate program in economics in the United States. Prior to enrolling, I must complete micro/macro economics 101 (or whatever the freshman year classes are numbered/called). I'd rather do these by distance education. The school has said distance education is fine, provided it is regionally accredited.

I've looked at a few schools, such as Athabasca (courses take 6 months, far too long) and American Military University (1500$ for the two courses...Expensive!!).

So, do any of you know a school that is 1) regionally accredited 2) the courses short in duration 3) not crazy expensive?

    Thanks kindly for your help!

    BJWD,

Would a community college work? I have several students each quarter who are completing micro and/or macro for grad school admissions purposes. Community colleges are pretty inexpensive and should meet your other criteria.

Guelph is a good school. I'll look into that. Thanks!

Regarding the community college.. I'm unfamiliar with the American community college system. Are they "regionally accredited"? My school said "any local college will do" when I asked them where I ought to take the courses. Do CC's offer distance education?

    Hi bjwd,

I forgot to ask you if you are American or not! Makes a big difference in the cost of the course from what I learned after the post. It appears that internationals are paying 200% of the local rate. I assumed you were Canadian when you mentioned Athabasca.

Tell me, where did you get accepted in a Masters Economics program without basic economics courses? I have an Economics degree from Guelph that's way I'm asking,

    Thanks,
    MP8

If a community college will work for you...

    1. Clovis Community College, Clovis, MN. Clovis is regionally accredited.

    2. Courses are 15 weeks. You could take Micro & Macro the same semester. You can also examine the syllabi as well

    http://www.clovis.edu/ecampus/Courses/Spring.asp

    3. Cost for 6 credits is only $222 (not a typo). This includes the $50 online fee per course:

    http://www.clovis.edu/FinancialInfoAid/TuitionFees/index2.asp?Term=Spring

    http://www.clovis.edu/ecampus/Registration/Index.asp

My 14 year old homeschooled daughter is enrolled in Math courses at Clovis. I am very pleased with the school and level of instruction.

    Best of luck.

I am Canadian. However, I have a visa for the United States (via my wife to be). I have a masters in political economy and lots of undergraduate work in economics but just not intro micro/macro. I never took them. The uni is being strict to the letter for the pre-reqs, which is annoying but understandable, I suppose.

With your background, will the university accept the CLEP Exam for Micro and Macro?

Thanks Capella Rocks, I will look into that school now. On the surface, I'd say 15 weeks might be a tad too long. The price is right!

Hmmm...good question... I'll find out. Maybe they will.

I honestly don't mind taking the classes though. I kinda like school, and doing some freshman classes would be fun.

Well, best of luck - can you share where you are going to pursue the econ degree?

I don't understand how someone with a masters in political economy and lots of undergrad work in econ is being made to take the prereqs for what they've already taken. Your master degree would likely qualify you to teach these courses at most universities.

Have you discussed this with an economics faculty member at the program to which you have been admitted?

I'd have serious questions about the program if they were THAT inflexible.

    Where's H-Bomb Ted?

If you hold on, H-bomb Ted will give you about twenty links. But like the others say, go the community college route for the Micro/Macro Economics courses....good savings!

Check out the CUNY Baccalurate Program or any of the CUNY schools online programs:

    www.cuny.edu

they are offering a "winter session" that is three weeks long (in most of the CuNY schools) From Jan 2-22, 2008 and can bang out a three credit course in no time. the tuition is not that bad too.
