In Brazil we call those MMA wannabe's "pit boys" (Pitbull + Playboy. "Playboy" in brazilian portuguese is a slang for rich and snob guys). They really give a bad image to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA in general in Brazil, a country with a tradition of great MMA fighters (well, UFC was created by the Gracie family anyway).

Funny thing, I'm brazilian, but I've never trained BJJ. I've trained Wushu (with a Chinese master in my hometown Curitiba), Shotokan Karate and little bit of Muay Thai.

But I do respect BJJ a lot. I love to re-watch the original no-rules UFC with Royce Gracie. That was so much better than the boring UFC that we have now...

The first few UFCs were the best - true tournament style with limited rules and no weight divisions.

So is that what the movie "Red Belt" was all about?

I went to Brazil in the late 1980's and the rage in the town I was in seemed to be Jeet Kun Do (spelling?) or Bruce Lee Kung Fu since they had a local dojo.

Being from the San Francisco bay area, I have no idea why Jeet Kun Do hasn't become as big as one might think. I believe there remains to be one of the original Jeet Kun Do academy in Oakland, but you never hear much about it. Thats kind of a shame IMO.
