So what is there after the doctorate degree?

If you are teaching, what is next, jus tresearching, or is there an avenue of ceritifaction, etc? Curious what is the next step in education, or is that it (the degree i mean).

Not sure but hope to find out soon! ;) I know I have my eye on a PMP and maybe an MBA in Finance from TUI. I have 4 of the 11 classes already done.

There are many things one can do after the doctorate.
    Such as:
    1. Get a professorship.
    2. Get another doctorate.
    3. Go to truck driving school.
    4. Flip your vehicle on the interstate.

I have taken more frequent and longer bicycle rides to repair the mental and physical damage!

If somebody is studying for a degree, particularly way up there at the doctoral level, wouldn't he/she have already given some thought to the reason why?

There has to be some purpose, goal or intention to justify all the effort, expense and aggravation.

If one's desire is to qualify for a particular kind of professional job, then pursue that position. If one's desire is learning, knowing and understanding, then continue self-guided study and look for interesting research opportunities. (Things like postdoc positions perhaps.) If the desire is to teach, then look for good ways to do that.

    Just researching??

Of course, several reasons. For the understanding, in depth, of a particular issue, to further the ever changing issues surrounding that framwork, as well as to obtain a position in the industry of choice.

For me, researching is only so rewarding. Since I have been in higher ducation as a student for 10+ years, that is now a hole, and I am just seeing if others see that as well.

By your response, it seems I have offended you, I did not mean to - it was a real feeling and thought that I am having. I have jumped into academia, and have avenues for outlets of continued development, but wanted to see what others have done, to better understand what I can do in the future.

I think everybody feels this regardless of the education level completed. My advice: start developing hobbies.

    Feelings of a void...

Despite feelings of being void somehow, the best antidote is continuing to learn. This may mean continued research or doing another doctorate!

    Funny!

Han, I think you are not alone. After I finished my MBA (which had been my hobby and all-consuming passion) I was dying to teach as I missed the adrenaline rush of new semester, new people, new goals. Now that I'm teaching I still have that but am looking forward to starting my doctorate soon. I'm doing some basic research into potential topics.

But Han, you have the TT holy grail - you don't "need" more certification. Hobbies are my suggestion. Or train for a marathon. Do a century bike ride. Travel to exotic places. Write a book or two. Or just get a good suntan.

Randall, what can I say? I think you're hooked! I am tempted by a MAcc to go with my MBA but think I'll do the doctorate instead and put my CPA dreams into a CMA, which won't require extra schooling.

I know! BUT, if I do another one (PhD or EdD) it will be from a traditional school like the University of South Florida.

In some earlier editions of Bear's Guide I wrote about the proposal at the University of Chicago to launch a degree beyond the doctorate. They were going to call it the Chancellorate. I don't believe it ever got off the ground. I suggested at the time that at least holders of the Chancellorate wouldn't have to worry about finding a job, since they'd be on Social Security by the time they finished.
