Congrats to I'll Have Another on winning the derby. I'll Have Another refers to the owners love of cookies, not alcohol. As one who has had a lifelong love affair with desserts, I was thrilled with his victory.
A rookie jockey and the 19th pole position. Who would have thought. And you coulda bought him a year and a half ago for $11,000 -- which is what the current owner did. A bit more now, I guess . . . and even more after (you heard it here first) he wins the Triple Crown.
I hope you're right about I'll Have Another winning the Triple Crown. It's been a long time since we've had one. Affirmed was the last in 1978. Although I wonder if the much longer Belmont will cause I'll Have Another some trouble. Eleven thousand for I'll Have Another. How about that. My wife told me he cleared $2 million during the Derby. Quite a ROI. Speaking of Triple Crown winners, Seattle Slew was one in 1977. I had a tremendous thrill today. Where we stable our horse, I learned, is the grandson of Slew. A breathtaking 18 hand horse called Slew Chief. He's a jet black 7 year old with so much energy it was stunning. I never thought I'd be around horse racing royalty.
My wife has been wanting me to take her to a race at the Kentucky Derby for years. She wants to go when all the lovely ladies wear those fancy hats. Do they wear hats only on certain occasions? or always? From what I have seen on TV, it seems to be big deal. Abner
