Kennedy-Western & Cal Coast: Are they in the same league?

In its common-law roots, a license was simply permission-- which could be revoked at the Crown's pleasure-- to disobey a law. Kind of puts the whole issue of state licensure into perspective, doesn't it?

"It would normally be illegal for you to do this.. but here, if anyone asks, show them this note."

    Tharwt?

Please describe your view as to who would be able to best benefit with a degree from K-W.

The Australian and The Higher Education Chronicle are two well respected publications that have declared Kennedy-Western to be a degree mill. A K-W degree is illegal in the state of Oregon. Students from California and Oregon are not allowed to enroll at K-W. K-W has fled California, Hawaii, and Idaho to avoid academic fraud laws enacted in those states. This indicates to me that K-W has a horrible reputation.

Let's put fleeing into perspective. Other than the Telshe Yeshiva fleeing the Nazis in Lithuania during the war (thank God they made it out), whoever heard of a university fleeing a jurisdiction to avoid government penalty--as opposed to relocating for some constructive reason? Still more (or less), whoever heard of a legit university fleeing a jurisdiction without moving? Gimme a break.

Absolutely not! He has not broken any TOS that I know of.

While my opinion is that his message is destructive, if people followed his advice, he is free to present that message none the less.

Agreed; I wasn't serious anyway Bill. He's such a hoot -- what the heck else would we do? Besides, It’s kinnda nice to have a resident conduit into the bowels of the KW establishment.

Hey, I’m well into my first courses at Athabasca U. Great school! They have a huge, high-tech, D/L setup that is almost comical within the rural setting. And I do mean *rural*. Surreal beauty on campus, high tech distribution, satellite feeds, Cable TV sub channels. I’m a bit high on the whole thing at the moment but that will mellow out. Well worth taking a virtual tour: http://www.athabasca.ca.

Thanks guys for helping in so many ways. You too RJT, if nothing else, you serve to remind me of why I’m doing it the right way this time!

The idea is certainly tempting, but I like to think that we are above the sort of Stalin-like thought control being practiced at the KW Pub.

As annoying as RJT can be (repeating the same falsehoods and distortions over and over), he hasn't violated the TOS, and is therefore most welcome to stay and offer his opinions.

    Bruce,

I agree. Without the RJTs of the world, DegreeInfo would serve in a diminished capacity. Although I'm surprised that I was taken seriously on the motion! Something Pavlovian afoot methinks…

Please keep up the good work Bruce, et-al. I'm not going to get all mushy on ya, but this site has been the most influential place I've likely ever visited on the net. The crew that posts here has been overwhelming in their intellectual generosity to me. I’ve received more academic direction from the members on this board than in the $100’s I’ve shelled out for dubious “professional” advice; some that led me to K-W!

I’ve already been approved to challenge COMP-200 at Athabasca U, I plan to set’em up and knock’em down just as fast and just as many as the rules will allow. That’s not to say I’ve not got my work cut out for me. I’m already sweating the thought of some of the COMP/SCI/MATH 400 level courses!

But I *will* sit the Alberta Bar before I’m 50 God willing. With the unaccredited monkey off my back, there’s no reason it can’t be done now.

    Cheers…Randy

I certainly agree, and although I believe I perform better in a residential setting, the knowledge of general academia here is quite impressive.

I also have received more direction here, even compared with talking to the local RA registrars. Sometimes I wonder about the compensation of these "professionals".

Excellent, and good luck with your goals.

I take almost nothing seriously, especially not myself nor the stuff I read on-line. Sometimes the best way to respond though is to assume that it was intended to be serious even though I don't believe it was meant seriously.

I believe I just made sense but if it doesn't, then never mind.

One of the great (or bad, depending on your viewpoint) things about this board is that we will assume *any* opinion is valid unless it violates the TOS.

With those guidelines, we had to assume that your motion was serious until we heard otherwise <smile>.

Seeing that this has turned into a hypothetica--and satirical--referendum on RJT....

I've been one of the more active jousters with RJT and his opinions. But I'm all in favor of people like him posting within the confines of the TOS. First, that's what the TOS is there for. Second, his arguments regarding unaccredited schools are self-defeating. (In pick-up basketball, we call this "self-check," where the player is so bad you don't have to guard (check) him, he does it himself.) Finally, it's interesting to watch his identity (and gender) change while his posts remain unerringly on-message (and off-target).

It was David Yamada who speculated that the Oregon law might be unconstitutional because it infringes on freedom of speech and freedom of association. I don't remember if he mentioned an equal protection or interstate commerce claim. He could well be right; he's a law professor whilst I am a mere member of the bar.

However, in my posts on the subject, I maintain that Oregon is probably entitled to forbid the use of any academic title or credential that they judge to be fraudulant as a consumer protection device enacted pursuant to the state's police power.
