I think his words have been misinterpreted. I misinterpreted them at first, too. Upon seeing it on repeat in my various feed all day today, I don't think he was saying that the killer was MAGA. I think he was saying that, before we had all the information we have now, MAGA was pointing fingers in every which direction to find some group to pin it on. Which would be accurate IF that's what he meant. I could say more about Kimmel's hypocrisy, ABC's double standards, and the concerning FCC involvement, but I've hit my wall early today. As Johann would say: Me go nap now. Bye.
It isn't that ABC dumped him. Corporations run scared all the time. It's that the government--driven by Trump--did it.
ABC did it. The government pressured didn’t suspend anyone, ABC did. They showed they will bend the knee at any request to this admin. We’ve seen this before. Give an inch and they take a mile. This is only the start of the extortion.
I read on NY Post a additional reason why Kimmels shows was suspended has something todo with timing of the Kirk comments thatoiiì Jimmy Kimmel made related to Nexstar-Tegna $6.2 Bil deal. New York Post: Here's the real reason ABC suspended 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' https://share.google/KOK6LRx6AKsoVBO7v
I have to disagree. In such matters, it is key to get to the root cause. ABC would never have taken this action if both Trump and the FCC Chairman hadn't weighed in--at the same time Disney had merger business before the FCC. Context is key.
Ironically, Kimmel didn't say anything about Kirk. His comments were about the shooter and MAGA. That's why they got all riled up.
Most importantly, the Trump administration threatening to pull broadcasters' licenses is openly authoritarian, and people are right to be alarmed about that. (I would argue that in a free society broadcasters shouldn't need a license, in part because of this exact danger, but I suppose that ship has long since sailed.) That said, a lot of people are assuming that ABC acted from fear of the administration, but Kimmel was on the chopping block anyway, so I can't help but wonder whether ABC just used this nontroversy as an excuse to do what they wanted to do anyway and get rid of him.
ABC Wants Kimmel Back But Has To Lower the Temperature According to one of the individuals familiar with the situation, Kimmel’s planned Wednesday monologue as “very hot,” taking aim at the MAGA base. He planned to address the right-wing backlash to his remarks made earlier in the week regarding the politicalization of Charlie Kirk’s killing. It was then that Disney executives had conversations with Kimmel about “taking down the temperature” of his monologue, according to the individual. Nexstar announced its plan to pul Kimmel’s show at the same time. #CNN #News
Except that the airwaves were a limited entity. Free and unfettered use would have cause chaos and confusion as media competed for broadcast frequencies. The FCC-as-watchdog came along because TV got popular during McCarthyism. But that doesn't diminish the need to regulate airwave usage. But.... Cable "TV" doesn't fall under the domain of the FCC. That's why South Park can do whatever they want. But ABC has local affiliates who still broadcast over the airwaves, so that's why they're running scared. (That and they have a $6 billion merger deal the FCC still has to okay.)
Not needing a license doesn't have to mean a free for all. There could be tradable property rights established for frequencies, wattages, and locations.
President Trump and his administration are telling lies about the left being primarily responsible for political violence. The political violence coming from the right is much more common than from the left. Analysis: What data shows about political extremist violence https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/right-wing-extremist-violence-is-more-frequent-and-deadly-than-left-wing-violence-data-shows
Couldn't resist, if you didn't read the article the two paragraphs that address the percentages are: quote: Based on government and independent analyses, right-wing extremist violence has been responsible for the overwhelming majority of fatalities, amounting to approximately 75% to 80% of U.S. domestic terrorism deaths since 2001. ... By contrast, left-wing extremist incidents, including those tied to anarchist or environmental movements, have made up about 10% to 15% of incidents and less than 5% of fatalities.
Well, I personally pursue the truth. I admit that Trump is prone to telling lies. There are also people that pursue information that supports whatever it is that they want to believe rather than pursuing the truth. Now when you have a large group of such people that want to believe whatever Trump says then you have a group called the MAGA base.
