I noticed some guns on Google, and the ads said "add to cart". How do registration, background checks and stuff like that work? Weird.

Typically online businesses will only ship to an FFL dealer. It is up to the local FFL dealer to do the proper checks. The local FFL dealer will probably charge a fee for handling the transaction, usually $25-50 in my area. Plus a fee for the background check. My answer is based on my experience purchasing a firearm online through one of the gun auction sites, don't recall which one.

If a business agrees to ship to anything other than an FFL dealer, it is probably illegal. I don't know what the rules are regarding private sellers.

    Yes you can.

What you cannot do is receive the weapon through and from the "internet". In general, the weapon has to be shipped to Federal Firearms Licensed establishment in the destination State.

In general, private sellers cannot sell across State lines (some states have neighbor-state agreements), and they still need to comply with all non-Fed laws.

The receiving FFL will do the background checks and make sure that the buyer is compliant with not only Federal, but State, county, city, Burroughs, HOA, and Girl Scouts laws, regulations, orders, rules, and sticky notes...

    Partially kidding.

You should try and buy one and see what happens. Then let us know, for your own intellectual curiosity. If it's easy you can reinforce your already held anti 2A beliefs and if it's hard you can just ignore it.

It seems easier just to go to the local gun shop, at least I can see the gun in person and have questions answered right then and there. I am looking for a new gun.

No thanks. I will just go to a local gun shop. Turner's by my house closed down! Damn, they had such good deals too.

It is certainly possible to buy a 3D printer (under $1,000), and, separately, the software to make a gun. Videos on how to do it on YouTube.

Thanks! I wasn't aware of that. I am looking at buying my second gun.

this is correct, and most infrequent buyers would do so. But, if you are a collector, the internet is a perfect place to "buy". There are some very rare weapons which can be only discovered, as any rare item, through the internet.

If this is a pistol or revolver (small arms) you are looking for, may I suggest you go to a range and shoot about 100 rounds with it. Your hand will thank you.

Long arms, that is a total different story.

What are you looking for specifically? What is the purpose of the "gun"?

I am looking for a 38 S&W revolver. I have shot them before. The purpose of the gun is mainly to go to the shooting range. I like guns. I don't want a gun that has a lot of kick back.

Why do you assume that because I am Dem that I am anti 2A?
