I mean really hate it. I feel as if it is a total waste of what little life I have to go to a job everyday just so I can have material crap like clothing and housing and computers, and tvs etc. I mean in reality it's all as good as gone when I kick the bucket anyway. So why bother. Why sell your life to someone else just for some green pieces of paper.

Really shouldn't there be more to life than this?

Well, Xarick, those green pieces of paper with pictures of dead politicians seem to be mighty important on this plane of existence insofar as they represent stores of value and mediums of exchange. To that extent, they do allow one to acquire a roof over one's head, food in one's belly, and clothes on one's back. While it is true that I have once seen a statistic showing that 80% of the people hate their jobs (which should cue one in to the notion that the trick seems to be figuring out how to become one of the 20% that actually love their jobs), having to do without a roof over one's head, food in one's belly, and clothes on one's back would seem to be a much worse fate than simply hating one's job. But, quite frankly, Xarick, you do seem a bit depressed. I think you ought to go see a counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist. Also, look up that old thread of about a year ago in which Ted Heiks and DesElms advised you on your depression.

I love my job :D I had a job one time that I hated and it really sucked. If you have a job you hate...quit and find one you like. What is your passion?

    Xarick,

I get into this mode of thinking every once in a while. That's when I tell my husband that I want to live on a tropical island and live off the land, have my own animals and crops, and make a little money for clothes and other necessary items. It's not far reaching at all to feel that way. Many unindustrialized societies do not spend 10 hours a day sitting in a cube or at a computer, hardly seeing the fruits of their labor. They are taking care of herds and crops and tending to family matters, all things directly related to our survivial. The problem is being born into this lifestyle...it's almost impossible to get out of it. I've come to accept my job even though I feel like you do once in a while.

I don't have any problem with this advice with one exception...find a job you like and get hired, then quit your current job. ;)

It's funny that you say this, as Dominica sees a lot of this. Most of the islands in the area are touristy, but Dominica doesn't have the white sand beaches that most tourists seek, so aside from a little eco-tourism there's not much there.

What we do have is incredibly mountainous terrain and fertile volcanic soil, which means that it's easy to grow crops there. If one goes into the interior, one sees a lot of banana farmers, but if one goes into the deep interior, one also sees Rastafarians and, like you describe, Westerners, who have quit the rat race in favor of a more pastoral existence. I've seen Swedes living up in the hills who grew all sorts of things, and used to live next door to a French family who herded goats.

Agriculture is hard work, though. Be careful what you wish for!

indeed - if you don't enjoy what you do, you hate going to work.

I love my job and enjoy going to work 99% of the time - since no job is perfect, I can't say that there aren't days where I wish I'd win a jackpot of a few million $ and do what I want to do... but hey, if life were like that, we wouldn't need a <insert brand> card :)

Im not in an office. I am a bus driver. So I work all odd hours and I pretty much see the bottom of the barrel of american citizenry. When you will cheat the bus system for fare you have sunk as low as low can go.

As for the depression. Councelors and psychologists don't have a clue. Life is what it is and we can hide it and mask it, but that doesn't change it. 100 years at most is what you got... how much of that will you waste slaving away for something that has no lasting value? (and I am just trying to discuss an interesting topic not psycho analyze anyones thought patterns)

I feel most badly for children who are stuck in what we call SCHOOL which is really just training to become slave workers in the american society to continue our consumeristic ways.

I agree somewhat again, Xarick. Do you have children? Are they homeschooled? I've thought about homeschooling my daughter once she is 5 and keeping her out of any sort of school system. Unless, of course, she wishes to go to college.

I do have children, but not school age yet. However, I have read that statistically home schooled children are grades past their counter parts in public school systems.

Now some private school systems are not too bad, however they are very expensive. But if you shove your kids in public school they will learn how to socially accept everything as right and good, but not how to read and write.

yep - agreed when you talk about schooling.

The public school system is horrible - riddled with drugs and children who's parents are not home for them but defend them in the school system no matter what they did .. my little darling would never....

As far as dealing with the bottom of the barrel of citizenry - walk a day in the life of a Police Officer, then you can speak about dealing with the bottom of the barrel of citizenry.... while being a bus driver is not a glorious job by any stretch of the imagination, there are a lot of worse jobs out there - and I could point out a # of folks who would be happy to land a steady job - let alone where they don't have to freeze their hands off in the winter, nor blister in the summer from the heat - all in all, you really should count your blessings.

Are your children healthy ? Do you have a roof over your head? Money coming in? I'd say you shouldn't complain... you don't have to cheat the bus system for fare - so how bad is your life in its current state, really ?

You're going to pursue more education - again, there are plenty of folks out there who would love to be able to afford to go to school...

Seeing the negative in most everything is easy - so, turn off the news, stop reading the newspaper and instead, take the time to smell the roses and count your blessings - even those in diguise.

I will admit it is nice to not be out in the cold, but I would prefer to have normal bathroom breaks and I sure miss having a lunch break. But as far as the people go.. I use to have faith in people I have lost much of that after being a bus driver. That is not really fair though. And frankly it is not the honest people who shirk the fare that bother me.. it is the dishonest.

But I am not trying to complain about my exact situation. I am trying to look at the American situation as a whole. Something I think about all the time.

Life = time at least that is how we measure it.
So for every ounce of time I give to something like a job I am giving them a piece of my life. It just seems to me that for all of us in the world there must be a better use of our life then selling it to someone just so we can have stuff.

I realize that the world works the way it works, but more and more it seems that American life is simply work to consume then work more to consume more until you die having done nothing, but sell your life so you can consume worthless goods.

eerrrr.. does that make sense.. cause it sounds way better in my head.

Actually, it would probably be best if one found a new job that you actually like and only then quit the old job you hate.

I really dislike my job...I mean I REALLY dislike it...but it pays the bills, it allows me to do some of the things in life I enjoy, it helps others from time to time, and it keeps me out of trouble. I think many people dislike their jobs and many more probably dislike school. Neither, in my opinion, is a waste. Work is not something that should be hated. Work has merit...it builds charactor and it is honorable. Biblically speaking, work is good for us. It was, in the beginning, a priviledge. Even if you hate your job, it gives you something to compare those things in life that you DO enjoy. If everything was peachy how would you know what you really liked and what you didn't? As much as I loathe my job I'm thankful that I have it. There are millions upon millions of people in this world that were born in countries where they will never have the same opportunities that you have, even if those opportunities include the priviledge of going to work every day to a job you hate, so you can earn money that allows you to eat every day and sleep in a controlled, safe environment.

It might be not what you would like to hear, Xarick, but this is in my humble opinion the best piece of advice you got. You are the one in charge of your future, and the sole responsible for your past, and present. I find myself sometimes puzzled wondering what I am doing living abroad (this is my fifteenth year since I left my country for only "one year to learn English"), why did I leave my family and friends or working forthis or that company? What I try to do is to work on creating all necessary conditions to change the situation so when an opportunity knocks on my door (and sooner or later they arise) I´m ready. And that preparation often involves working on oneself. Regards and my best wishes.

Okay.. ted you missed the point. I may have a depression problem, but that has nothing to do with what I am talking about here. You are missing the point. But so many seem to be missing the point. Trapped inside this world just accepting what they throw at you as true. It is like the mattrix except where the computer is commercialism and where you are so plugged in you begin to believe you must work 70 hours a week in order to have that great house.

Listen, at my job few work 40 hours a week. Why... why would anyone work more than necessary. Why? MONEY because they want more... because they want more stuff.. because somehow they have been convinced that the american dream is stuff ownership. Is this really what life is about? What happened to living? where did it go. Somehow now I am forced to work for money instead of living life. Doesn't that seem crazy to anybody else?
