I just voted 'no', homosexuality is not a sin.

I don't employ the concept of sin in my life, so strictly speaking I don't believe that anything is a sin.

Many people use 'sin' to mean 'evil' or 'wrong' or 'bad'. If we want to do that, then I'll say that I don't think that homosexuality is evil per se.

It does kind of defeat the whole telos of human reproduction, which leads some to think of it as 'unnatural'. That's true, but no more so than sexual abstention.

Stanislav, are you certain that practicing homosexuality is a sin and, if so, exactly how are you certain? Are you prepared to vacillate and change your mind? Either it is a sin or it's not.

You know, as the condition does not afflict me, I do not give it much thought (and neither should you btw). It hinges on that one line by Paul that, just maybe, may be open to interpretation. The Church is anti-gay, but it was never a theological focus rabid Evangelicals make it to be. And, the whole question has exactly zero to do with "Politics".

I really don't understand the purpose of this thread. :Flush:

For those who are pursuing a degree in theology, it is a valid question. For those who are not pursuing theological studies, it may or may not be a moot point.

And in either case it's misplaced in the Politics forum.

    In a way, I agree.

But most of contemporary politics seems to consist of moral condemnations: Bigot! Racist! Homophobe! and many more, along with loud demands for fundamental social changes in the ways things are have historically been done and even to how issues are conceived. (Political activists today are the lineal descendants of 17th century dressed-in-black puritans trying to cleanse society of sin.)

So sometimes it's interesting to inquire into what, if anything, justifies all this stuff. (Certainly part of the incompatibility between traditionalist Islam and the modern West is basic disagreement on underlying social/moral values.)

It's not just relevant to politics, it penetrates to the heart of what today's politics is.

Kizmet, that's an excellent observation. The following forums are currently provided at degreeinfo.com:

    Career and Specific Degree Topics
    - Business and MBA degrees
    - Nursing and medical-related degrees
    - Education, Teaching and related degrees
    - IT and Computer-Related Degrees
    - Military-related education

Maybe it's time to create a "Theology and Religious Degrees" area -- and move this thread there?

It would be a good way to corral all of the theological inquiries into one forum, just as the creation of the political forum has done. It offers focus. While you're at it, you might as well create a forum for degrees in history because it too is popular. But the likelihood of all that that happening has as much chance as the creation of a forum for degrees in English or math.

Gaydom has touched most everyone, either familially or socially. Therefore, if heaven and hell are real...

...and if they are eternal destinies that cannot be changed, once we get there...

...then the discussion and definition of sin is a bonafide issue for theology students because people's eternal destinies are in the mix, to include yours (the reader).

But the topic of Jesus, sin and the Bible seems to create angst and consternation among many angry people (but certainly not all people). The topic should always be broached in agape love.

The issue is what it is.

What consenting adults do to each other behind closed doors is none of my business, nor do I care.

However, don't try to force any kind of political agenda on me or my children.

    Bruce, your point is understood.

    - Humans change
    - Politics changes with the wind
    - and human laws change by legislative action
    - but do God's spiritual principles change?

If God is unchanging, then when the Lord Jesus eventually returns to the earth at His Second Coming, then He will bring with Him His unchanging spiritual principles for global implementation. However, that day has not yet arrived -- and in the interim, everyone has free will to do anything they want, to include breaking human laws and violating God's spiritual precepts (albeit there are consequences). In the present age, no one is forced to accept God's precepts, until they enter eternity, which happens when their mortal body dies. At that point, our eternal fate is sealed i.e. we go to heaven or hell.

The only way for an unchanging God to accept us is to forgive us for sin. However, it's an educational process that involves:
    - learning what sin is
    - repenting of it
    - willingly accepting Jesus into our heart
